Good we finished the roof yesterday! During the night it started pouring down. Soooo much rain! Ingólfur used the day for backing and after having coffee with our helpers from the day before we went for a drive to have a look at our mares and Aðalsteinn. At the intersection to Reykjahverfi we met a pair of hitchhikers looking to get a ride in direction to Mývatn. As the weather was that bad we decided to just go all the way instead of leaving them at the next intersection where we intended to go to Aðaldalur. So Mývatn it was, a lovely drive with interesting conversation. On the way back we stopped at the field with our mares and saw that Sæla kept the stallion company whilst the other mares seemed not to be interested in him at all at the moment. We'll see if we get her back in foal.

New roof - Day 2

And up they went again today! Now it was time to put the new corrugated iron panels, which we had already ordered to length last year, in place. Not so easy when you have no crane to lift them up, but we found a good solution for that. The guys did a brilliant job and in no time things were just ready! Could hardly believe it. Next thing on our schedule is to paint the house...

New roof - Day 1

Shortly after 8 o'clock in the morning our friend Óli arrived and he and Ingólfur went up on the roof starting to remove the old iron, throwing large chunks down into the garden. They mostly took good care of not hitting my flowers, just one a panel slipped and hit some tulips, but those had already finished flowering, so not too much damage done there. When Bjössi and Jói arrived things went really fast and the roof was stripped in no time. After lunchbreak Þorvaldur, the contractor, arrived and when the last remains of the chimney had been removed they started to cover all unnecessary holes in the roof with new boards and replacing old, broken boards. The aim of today was to be finished putting the roofing felt in place. And they made it! Think they were that scared of me they didn't even take many breaks.

Up on the roof

As I'm afraid of heights I usually evade getting on our roof, but today I had no excuse as we are going to renew our roof and wanted to use the opportunity to get rid off stuff in our attic without moving it through the whole house. In fact I could just enter through the roof hatch from our house and didn't have to climb from the garageroof over a ladder to the roof. Better way for me. When up there I could clearly see it was really time to renew the corrugated iron as it was still the original one from 1963 and hadn't been painted recently. There was quite a bit of rust and it wouldn't last many years from now. So better do it now. Will be my last time up there for the near future!

We've rarely been riding the last few days, too busy around the house and moving horses (Ögn and Sæla went to meet Aðalsteinn frá Íbishóli). So we saddled up this evening and went for a beachside ride enjoying the beautiful weather and good tracks. Should do that more often!

There had been a few ducks around, coming to get some food in our garden. I suspected that at least one of the females was actually brooding somewhere nearby. Today she honoured us with her whole family visiting our garden. It was fun watching them charging around trying to find the best treats here and there.

We went for a short visit at our friends' place in the east of Iceland. As usual we got a really warm welcome from Pétur and Marietta and had a beautiful stay. Whilst there we had a look at the painting we ordered in April this year and really are looking forward to getting it home later this year.

Bye, bye chimney!

Next big project at home is fixing our roof. There has been some minor leaking alongside the chimney and as we really don't need it we settled on removing it completely and then just cover the hole when building the new roof. I have to mention that the corrugated iron was still the original one from 1963 and it was amazing there were just a few minor rustspots and no severe leakage. So Ingólfur climbed on the roof today and broke down the chimney, I was no use in assisting up there as I'm afraid of hights and so I just helped emptying the concrete coming down in a bucket into the trailer and sending the bucket back up again. To be continued...

...complete! At least for the moment there are all the horses supposed to be at Hagi in the field there. That's Vordís, Pandóra, Hugleikur, Blær, Þeyr and Blesi. Just released Pandóra there today, but her friends and family were somehow not too happy to see her... That'll change soon. Ögn is with our riding horses and will, together with Sæla, meet Aðalsteinn frá Íbishóli in a few days. Hopefully both will be in foal when we fetch them again!

Good to work outside in sunshine and warm weather. Bensi called and asked if we could assist finishing the fence next to the road. The circumstances for fencing there aren't too good as the ground is rather rocky and it's difficult to put the fencepoles down. But with the help of the tractor it's getting easier. Found a goose's nest when checking the fence to the neighbours, left all the eggs where they were supposed to be.

New adventures

Already last autumn we booked a spot with Sjóður frá Kirkjubær for Flugsvinn. As she had her foal earlier than we thought and therefore getting into heat earlier, too, we contacted the caretakers if we might come as soon as possible with her. So long story short, today was the day to move her and the foal to Eyjarfjörður. The little guy was supposed to get microchipped before leaving, so we decided to walk the 2 of them to our vet's stable. After catching Flugsvinn and leading her and the foal through both gates Ingólfur released Ögn into the field with Pandóra so she wouldn't be upset and alone. Little did I know that the foal was already so attached to its cousin it would try to run back full speed at least 3 times. Well, got so watch beautiful, very fast tölt and of course flying pace. I was really happy when we finally reached the vet's stable. There the foal got the microchip and was ready to be loaded with it's mum. When arriving at the stallion's pasture we were greeted by one of the caretakers and shown where to release our horses. Sjóður came running and fetching them back to his herd, behaving like a gentleman. So now we just have to wait and see if the date is a success.

I like to grow my own potatoes and already have 18 different sorts in different colours. I don't grow a lot of each variety, but like to have the diversity and possibility to choose what I like for each and every opportunity. Got a few new allred sorts and a black with yellow spots. So today I went to plant and hope for a good summer and harvest later this year. We'll see what time brings!

Vignir, our vet, came today to geld Þeyr, Blær and little Blesi. Things went fast and well and they were up again in no time. When everybody was ready to go they got a ride to Haga, where they'll stay over summer. Moving around will be good for them.

The dove is still here and even coming to feed in our garden, which gives me good opportunities to watch it and take pics. Later today I spent some time with Pandóra, Flugsvinn and the foal and it's amazing how this little guy's growing, just 2 weeks old and already looking so different. Pandóra is in fact a cousin to the little guy as their fathers are brothers. Pandóra out of Snillingur frá Íbishóli and the foal is son of the late Óskasteinn frá Íbishóli.

Yesterday I thought I'd heard a familiar birdcall, well familiar to me because I've heard it quite often in Austria, but never in Iceland before. Didn't see the bird, but heard it again early in the morning and was able to detect the source of the sound. It was an Eurasian collared dove. Managed to get a pic and hope it'll stick around a bit. Think it's the first one ever reported at Húsavík!

There they come!

Time to move the guys up to the stables to teach them a few basics before being gelded and released to the summerpasture. Pandóra and Hugleikur were left behind in the field as they were going to go to separate places afterwards. Ingólfur walked Vordís and Ögn followed by our 2 young stallions and Siffi's Blesi up to the stables. Of course the guys had to have a look at everything and run around like crazy a bit, but were more or less following like they were supposed to. We are lucky enough that we just have to cross the main road once and are then inside fences when walking to the stables. So not too many chances to do stupid things. After getting the bunch of them into the paddock we actually had to get them inside, which wasn't so easy but we managed in the end. Now we had to convince them to get and stay in the boxes. Blær went into the stallionbox as we thought he'd be the most likely to misbehave and jump out. Þeyr was in the box next to him and Blesi opposite Þeyr. The only one misbehaving was 24 year old Vordís rearing and jumping around not being happy about being locked up. So we fetched the trailer, loaded Pandóra and Hugleikur, left Pandóra with Flugsvinn and the foal and Hugleikur and Vordís got a drive to their summerpasture. Vordís was gone in an instant, didn't even look back. Ögn is going to stay with the guys as a kind of babysitter.

We moved Flugsvinn and her foal to the big field by the sea today as we're planning on moving Vordís, Ögn and the youngsters up to the stable. It went surprisingly smooth getting the two of them out of the field without anybody else attempting to join. The little guy followed his mum like he was glued to her and didn't even mind Ingólfur touching him. Tíbrá, my ewe, had given birth to 2 white lambs yesterday and today we went to mark them. They got the numbers 208 and 210 as Bensi made a mistake with number 209 closing the ear of one of the lambs when marking. Well, think they don't care about those number.

Anyway the little one does well, nurses frequently and is quite a funny guy. Of course his mum is still rather protective of him towards the other horses, but soon he'll be allowed to get to know them.

Election day

Today was election day in Iceland and as I'm not personally connected to anyone on the ticket I was a great candidate for volunteering at the poll site. Ingólfur drove me to my designated site in the countryside and promised to fetch me when getting the voting boxes from the other sites in the evening. Little did I know it would be really hard for me staying there as we got a call from a friend when just leaving town that our mare Flugsvinn had given birth to her foal after Óskasteinn frá Íbishóli during the night. No way for me to check on them before getting back in the evening. So Ingólfur had a look and sent me some pics during the day. We got a little bay stallion, probably going to be really darkbay. So after an endless seeming election day I managed to finally see my foal. Cute little guy with, as it seems, all gaits. Looking forward to getting to know him better.

What about the guys?

So how are the foals? Good question! At the moment they are still separated as the little guy up at the stable didn't have the best start and is just getting stronger and more vivid. We had to get the vet to remove the placenta from Ögn yesterday as it didn't come on it's own. Not so much fun, but he got everything out. Then the little one got diarrhea from his mum's medication, which isn't good in such tiny foals. But he still drank well and seemed to be in good mood. Yesterday when going out for the first time, he didn't follow his mum and seemed disorientated. Had to put the lead around his butt and made him walk with me and his mum to the field that way. As the forecast for the night wasn't too good we put them inside again and on the way back he followed her already better than before. In the morning he seemed not so fresh and quite tired, but I'm not surprised about that as there are other horses in the stable and his mum all the time on the move to protect him from onlookers. We decided to put them out again in the morning and keep them there, not taking them inside in the evening. He followed his mum quite well and when in the field, he tried to jump and run a bit for the first time. You can imagen how relieved we were to see that. The older foal is doing very well and after fixing the fence we spent some time down at the field watching mother and son. I'm pretty sure Flugsvinn will be really happy when he's got another foal to play with. He's quite inventive, chews his mum's tail, jumps on her and whilst watching he attacked her from a higher place to make her play. Amazing how patient she is with him.

A star is born

At least that's what our friend Óli told us when Ögn gave birth to her son after Hugleikur. At the same time there was a fireball on the nightsky, which we missed as we were looking in the other direction or to be precise at our field and Ögn. When taking the routine evening horsedrive to check on Ögn, Flugsvinn and the foal, everything seemed calm and nothing special to be expected, the mares just eating their hay. But when we took the turn into the gravelroad passing our field, Ögn had a look at the car and then started to walk into the corner of the field, where she had given birth to Kóngur 6 years ago. There she laid down and went into labour. Of course my camera was at home, so we decided to give her some space, fetch the cam and come back. She was at the same spot when we came back and the amniotic sack started to show. After rolling over, standing up, laying down and so on, Ingólfur decided to check a bit better on her and see if everything was coming the right way. First he saw just 1 leg, but the moment I said it's time to call the vet, the other leg showed followed by the head. Ingólfur helped a bit and dragged the foal infront of Ögn so she could lick it clean and dry. The weather wasn't as it's best, it was cold and snow on the ground. When it started snowing again, we decided to get mother and son inside, where it was dry and warm. Up at the stable we moved Fönix and Sigtýr to empty boxes so Ögn could have the big first box for herself and the foal and wouldn't be bothered by a nosy onlocker in the next one. Then we grabbed a halter and the trailer and off we went back to the pasture. On the way back I stayed in the trailer with the little family, holding the foal so it would arrive safely at the stable. We supplied hay for Ögn and were hoping she'd get rid of the afterbirth on her own. At the first look he seems to be chestnut. Well, would be the first chestnut in Ingólfur's collection, I already have 2. So now we just have to wait and see how they'll be in the morning.

After waiting for exactly 2 weeks, being anxious about the weather, moving the pregnant mares to the field at the stable, making plans about having them inside if the weather would be really bad and so on, this little guy was born this morning. Our friend Mieke has been watching over the mares from her place and yesterday evening we were hoping it wouldn't take many more days before Flugsvinn would give birth. The milk was already running and everything ready, but she was still happily eating her hay. At 11 o'clock in the evening there wasn't anything going on, but this morning we got a call from Mieke about a silver dapple half dry foal at the field. Didn't take too long for us to go and have a look. The cute guy was still quite new when we came and his mum taking good care nobody would get too close. In the afternoon we moved them to the field down by the road where they got a fresh roundbale of really good hay and lots of peace. Hope Ögn will be ready to give birth soon.

Iceage

At least it felt a bit like that. This week the weather has been changeing quite and there was some sleety rain at Ísólfsstaðir. Combined with chilly winds the snow/ice just froze to the horses and they looked like big, walking icycles. No fun for them having this stuff hanging in their fur, mane and tail. When checking on them we counted and counted and counted again, but there was still one horse missing. Didn't like that and took a walk down to the shelter. And there the missing horse was. It just didn't hear the other leave because of the wind. I was really releaved when meeting Skuggi down there.

Stormy weather

The last 2 days have been quite stormy. Yesterday we just went to work and back home as you wouldn't have seen anything at the winterpastures even if you had tried, so much snow blowing around. Luckily we opened the new field at Ísólfsstaðir the day before yesterday and the horses were able to get shelter there at the old barn. Today it was still stormy, but not as bad as the days before. So we went to check on the horses. Our friend Magnús joined and we took a walk down to the shelter. The horses spotted us soon and came up to greet us. They were all in good shape so nothing to worry about.

Our friend Hanna and me were lucky today as there were amazing Northernlights and perfect weather to go and practise taking pics. We had a fulminant show and tried different locations. Great evening.

The weather has been quite stormy the last days and still was today when we visited the herd. We had opened into a new field and the horses enjoyed that quite much. They were very lively when we came and more than ready to say hi and sneak some treats. We'll have to keep a close eye on the weatherforecast the next days and probably open to another field soon. Kóngur and Rögnir came home just before Christmas and are having a break from training at the field close to the road with good shelter and tons of food. Looks like they like their time off.??????

New Year's walk

As our friend Óli had a New Year's resolution about walking and hiking a bit more, Ingólfur invited him and Laufey to take a walk on Bæjarfjall at Þeystareykir. I was first reluctant to join, but did so in the end and definitely don't regret. There was quite some snow and it was sometimes tiring to wade through it, but as I was the last in row, I was lucky enough to be able to use the footsteps others had already made. To our surprise we found living caterpillars on the snow. No idea what kind or where they came from. When on top there was and amazing sky above us, so beautiful colours! The way downhill was definitely faster than up as we just slided down on our bottoms.

Lucky me! When stopping by at home today I spotted an unusual bird in the trees in our garden. Fetched my cam and got some nice shots. When checking the pics I saw it was a female Eurasian Bullfinch. These are rather rare guests in Iceland this bird being the first record since 2011. Hope I'll see it more often.

Hjördís has arrived for her Christmasvacation and today we made laufabrauð, the traditional Icelandic thin bread eaten at Christmas. This time Ingólfur made it from scratch and I think we'll keep doing that in the future. It was fun to cut various patterns and then see how it would look after deepfrying.

Had to fetch Embla from Ísólfsstaðir today as she kept going through the fence to get to the even better pasture. All the other stayed where they were supposed to be but her majesty had different ideas. We can't have her doing that all the time so we fetched her and brought her to the securityprison with electric fences. Now our youngsters have a new victim for playing until we're going to take her inside.

Birds

Since Ingólfur started feeding the birds in the garden, we've had quite some interesting guests around. Mostly redwings, but there've been 3 blackbirds, at least 2 blackcaps and now fieldfares joined, too. Not to forget about the raven... The fieldfares are really cheeky and chase everybody else away. But sometimes they are so busy chasing others that they don't have time to eat. Think they'll have to learn to share.

Visited some happy horses at Ísólfsstaðir today. As the weather was beautiful we decided to go for a walk and the whole herd followed us. The horses had been happily munching away close to the gate most of the time and there was little grass left at that place. But as there are about 100 ha of pasture there are for sure places they hadn't visited yet and we found one on our walk. The herd liked it quite much there and stayed when we left.

Earlier this evening I saw a lot of people posting pics of Northernlights in our area. First I was a bit lazy to go, but then I decided to check on our friend's horses and try getting shot with them. Difficult, but definitely worth it. The horses were really interested in what I was doing there and one of them even taking care none would come too close to me nor the camera. Hope you like the pics.

That's what our gardenbirds thought when a raven came and stole their food. Ingólfur had put some old bread and stuff like that on an old treetrunk in the garden where various birds like redwings, a blackbird and a blackcap had been dining. Well, the raven was happy with his loot and took off to tell his friends. Now it's just wait and see if he comes back. I've been busy on the wood turning lathe and tried to turn crooked trees. It's getting better, but far from perfect. Still I like to exercise and hopefully get better.

When your horses have their well deserved autumnbreak, 2 youngsters are with a trainer and you have a lot of spare time you go for a walk. That's what we did today, but even then there were some horses...

...from my haybale? Or to be precise from my haybales! There were 2 haybales with huge holes in the plastic and a very guilty looking reddun mare. And no, it wasn't Vordís! Pandóra had discovered that the battery for the fence was empty and the hay was sooo tempting that she just leaned into the fence until she could reach the bales. Of course it wasn't enough to taste one, lot better to taste if the next one was as tasty... You can imagine that I wasn't too happy about that. So we fixed the electricity and put extra power on the fence around the bales. When we had left she of course had to try the fence again. Wasn't happy about the shock she got, but tried again and then even sent her friend Hugleikur to try. They both got the same results and decided to leave the fence alone for the moment.

The last 2 days we helped at Hólmavað with checking all the sheep. Both ewes, rams and those supposed to be the future breedingstock. Difficult to decide who's supposed to live and who's going to the slaughterhouse. In the end there were around 40 yearlings left who'll be bred for the first time. One of them is now mine. It's a black and white triplet and I'm looking forward to getting to know her better. Her number is 20-155 and now I'll have to find a name.

All around our garden! Ingólfur raked them up and put most of them in the trailer to be driven away. We raked quite some amount underneath our trees where they are going to protect the flower bulbs I planted earlier this autumn. And of course they'll make the birds looking for food happy as insects will hide there, too. And then I used an unwatched moment, grabbed the ladder and saw and cut off the extratrunk of our Larch. Like the look of it afterwards. Some roses are still flowering and I'll cut some of them to have inside when the weather gets colder.

What about the horses?

you might ask. Haven't heard much of them lately. Well, first things first: we'll probably get 3 foals after Hugleikur next summer. 2 of them will be very early as he did a nearly too good job with Flugsvinn and Ögn getting them pregnant in their first heat. Vordís is pregnant, too, but we aren't sure if she'll keep it as she's getting older and things are a bit more sensitive then. It should be her last foal anyway. Of course we hope the best and she's in very good shape physically and mentally. Hugleikur and Pandóra are growing like there's no tomorrow and started getting their wintercoat. Soon we'll have to fetch them and the mares home and the riding horses will move to Ísólfsstaðir.
