So little time to write, too much to do ;)

Well, there has been a lot to do since we went to "Æskan og hesturinn", riding school three times a week, shoeing, trying to organise the summerstay of our horses, thinking about the coming foals and so on.
Ingólfur and Negla were competing in Akureyri last weekend and made it to the B-finals in tölt, which is a quite good result for their first sportscompetition.
The other members from our ridingclub Grani made it to the finals too, which is a very good result!
Next weekend, the next competition is waiting for them and maybe I'm gonna join, you never know.

I attach a few pics of our horses today. As you can see, the bellies of the mares are getting bigger and bigger, just a question of time till they want to get rid of their foals ;)

Vordís is in foal with our Farsæll

Þokkadís (Maggi's mare) is in foal with Farsæll too.

Perla gets a foal from Djákni frá Hellulandi.

The father of Aldís' foal is Þeyr frá Holtsmúla

Æskan og hesturinn 2012

Friday afternoon 14 excited kids and their horses met in Saltvík to go to Akureyri and take part in the show "Æskan og hesturinn 2012". They were accompanied by 12 grown-ups, 6 cars, 4 horse- and 1 luggagetrailer.
When we arrived the first thing to do was to unload the horses and allow them to roll over in the paddock. Then we cleaned the stable, put the horses inside, unloaded the back of Svanhildur's car and sorted all saddles, bridles and helmets. Afterwards we went to the restaurant Greifinn where we had a very delicious pizza buffet.
There was just one thing left to do before we could go and relax: Training! That went very well, eventhough the younger group was a bit disappointed about not being allowed to play their favourite horseback game in the huge riding hall. Well, that has to wait.
What would a great trip like that be without getting ice-cream? We went 4 to buy ice-cream for everybody and I think there wasn't very much left, when everybody was finished.
The highlight of the night happened at 3.30, when we could hear a loud ripping noise followed by silence and then an even louder noise and the sound of a deflating air mattress. Bensis's mattress simply couldn't bear it any longer emoticon
After breakfast most of the kids went to the swimmingpool, while the grown-ups bought the last props. Soon it was time to get the horses ready and decide which riders would go to the opening ceremony. Dagný Anna, Thelma Dögg, Hrund, Katrín, Elín and Hjördís were the chosen ones and did their job very well.
Our younger group was number 6 in the program and it was hard to keep them calm as they were really excited to perform. Sigrún, Hjördís, Katrín, Garpur, Berta and Kristján did so well and we are all really proud of them.
During the break in the program the older group went to get themselves ready and the younger ones enjoyed some sweets. The older group was number 10 and they performed very well too.
Following the show the kids were invited to get hamburgers, fries and softdrinks.
I think we had very good and funny 2 days together! Takk fyrir mig!

Long weekend

As Magnús went with our friends Pétur and Marietta to the East one month ago, we had to go and get him back. List travelled with us, so we could use the possibility to get lessons with Marietta.
Magnús learned to use his back better and Ingólfur got instructions about how to improve Magnús' muscels.
Marietta showed List and me how we can go on and how I can help her to understand what I want and bend her to the right direction. I'm looking forward to work more with List that way.
Otherwise did we help with cutting hooves, moving horses, mucking the stable and so on.
Well of course we didn't forget to have good meals and even better talks ;)
Thanks a lot for this great weekend!

Finally news

The last weeks have been very busy, but finally I have some time to put in news.

First we got very nice visitors from the East, Pétur Behrens and Marietta Maissen. Pétur met his mare Pála for the very first time and I think he liked her a lot. We had a good time together, talking a lot about horses, training and much more.

Then we promised to bake confirmation cakes, which took quite some time, especially decorating them. It was very interesting and a lot of fun trying to make the cakes special for the big day. I put some pics of them here. You find them on pages 4-6.

Last but not least there was the big opening of the new ridinghall near Húsavík. Saturdayevening Ingólfur took part in the show "Fákar & fjör" in Akureyri and then the same group perfomed on Sundayafternoon in the opening ceremony. Hjördís and Elding took part, too. She and her friends had been training hard for their first, but probably not last, show. They all did very well.

Before I forget: I discovered how much fun it is to work with wood and started to learn a bit more about wood turning. I attach a few pics of the first results.

The bakerman is baking bread...

Well, that would be a fitting title for the baking classes, Ingólfur held yesterday in Kópasker. 7 interested ladies had booked a breadbakingclass and were anxious to learn the best held secrets of baking crunchy, tasty, fresh bread.
I think they were not disappointed with the outcome. We had a very good time there and laughed a lot. There is a new album with a lot of pics from the classes online. And one with pics of the beautiful sunset, too emoticon

Youngsters "frá Hellulandi"

The weather was very good today, sunshine and nearly no wind, so we went to have a look at the young horses in Helluland. We pictured the 5year old geldings Rökkvi, Kapteinn, Askur and Frosti and the sisters Sól and Sóla.
The geldings have started their further training and are mostly ridden outside, getting used to traffic, tractors and a lot more.

Mývatn Open 2012

Fridayevening we cleaned Magnús and Negla thoroughly, cleaned their mane and tail and tried to get out as much winterfur as possible. They were nice and shiny afterwards, ready for their big day on Saturday.
Well, Saturdaymorning came, we got up early, got ourselves ready, packed enough food and hot drinks, extrablankets for the horses, videocameras, my camera and went to Saltvík. Somehow, the horses were not as clean as the evening before, but no reason to panic. Combed them again, put a rug on each horse, taped Negla's hooves white, so it would look like she is having some kind of boots, which she actually doesn't need, put hay and water for the horses in the trailer, loaded the horses and off we went to Mývatn. On the way we picked up Sigga, who was going to come with us and Hjördís.
I decided to just be the photographer and delay List's and my first real competition on ice a bit more. We are in no hurry, are we?

Ingólfur and Magnús took part in Tölt B, which is the competition for not so expierenced horses and/or riders. It went quite well, except for the fact that Magnús was a bit afraid of creaks in the ice when he was supposed to go faster and started to gallop. But I got quite nice pics of them before.
Iðunn and Mína did very well too, but I think it was a bit cold in white riding trousers...
María Marta took part with 2 horses and managed to win Tölt B the second year in a row on Víkingur. Congratulations!
I was a bit shocked that a horse, that was on clear pace instead of fast tölt, made it to the finals! You find a picture of proof in the album, it is a red horse.

There were around 30 riders in Tölt A, some of course with more than one horse. Bjarni Páll and Góði were the first ones in the track, followed by Magnús Bragi/Heiðar and Guðmundur Karl/Sóldís.
Ingólfur and Negla did very well this time, no big mistakes and a score of 6,33. Not enough for the finals, but enough to feel very well about it ;)
Einar Víðir showed 2 horses and made it to the finals with one of them, the mare Líf frá Kotströnd. I would have seen him a bit more in front after watching the finals, but not the judges.
Toggi competed too on a mare from Kotströnd, but it didn't work out for him as well as it did for Einar. Bjarni Páll rode another horse, which he doesn't know so well yet. It was a young gelding, son of Glampi frá Vatnsleysu. I infact liked him quite well and we'll see what future brings for the two of them.
My favourite and the winner of Tölt A, were Magnús Bragi and Óskasteinn frá Íbishóli. They were dancing over the ice and it was easy to see for everybody, how willing and powerful Óskasteinn is.

The last thing I watched was the stallionscompetition. It was getting very windy, I'd even call it stormy and we decided to skip pace and go home instead.
There were 6 stallions taking part (the other 3 didn't show up) and our friend Kiddi and his stallion Djákni made it to the finals, but lost a place there. After seeing 5 of the stallions together in the track, I'm not sure about what to think about the judges decision. I would have seen Djákni a bit more in front, second place for my taste. But well, I'm no judge.
Magnús Bragi won again, this time on Vafi frá Ysta-Mói, son of Gustur frá Hóli.

Alltogether it was a very interesting day on ice, many good horses, the weather could have been better, but it wasn't too cold. We were tired when we came home, the horses enjoying to roll over in the riding hall, taking a sandbath like chickens. Magnús and Negla will get a few days holiday now.
Have a look at the albums, there's a lot to see.

Northernlights

Last night we had beautiful Northernlights and I managed to take a few pics. Eventhough I really like them, they are not showing the real beauty and how small you feel when you watch them appearing, moving and suddenly disappearing. As it was Fullmoon too, we took a few moonshine pics on the way. Just go through the album emoticon

Sigtýr

It's been quite some time since we had a closer look at our young stallion Sigtýr, son of our Vordís and Geisli frá Sælukoti. We used the good weather today and visited him and his friends in a huge field close to Helluland. They are 7 together, 2 stallions and 5 geldings, so enough playpartners.
We liked what we saw, a young, good looking stallion with strong joints and feet and a highrised, well set neck. Looking forward to see him in his summerfur!

Ice!

Perfect weather, perfect ice, the best conditions for meeting fellow riders for a refreshing ride on ice. Sigga and Hjördís came with us to Kaldbakstjörn to try riding on ice for the first time. I think they were both a bit nervous, but got confident after the first rounds.
Quite many riders, I wouldn't have expected to come, took part in the ride and it was fun to watch and take pictures. We saw many very good horses and it would have been fun to have a small competition. But maybe next time.

An unexpected Visitor

As you know, there is a very rich birdlife in Iceland, especially in summertime. We often see Short-eared Owls close to our horses and Gyrfalcons are no uncommon sight. But it is a bit unusual to have a look out of the window and see a Gyrfalcon sitting on the fence just a few meters away from you.
I was quite excited and hoped he'd stay long enough to grab my camera and take a picture. Well, he definitely was in no hurry and not shy at all so I managed to take a few pics while he was watching the ducks in the harbour. It is an amazing feeling to see this majestic bird so close.

A day off

The weather has been beautiful the last days, so we repaired the fence of the big field, which the snow had taken down. Farsæll was the first one to enjoy the freedom there, yesterday it was the turn of the others. As you can see on the pics in the picturealbum, they really enjoyed going there and were in a hurry to leave the small paddock. Some of them in a bit too much hurry...
Meanwhile Farsæll had an appointment with Ingólfur as it was time to shoe him again. He took it well and was very patient (Ingólfur too). He was even ready to pose with Hjördís and Sigrún on his back emoticon

Not good to hurry too much....

Winter?

While Europe is freezing and suffocating in snow, the snow and ice here is melting away and the temperatures are close to +10°C.
The outdoorhorses are enjoying the unexpected warmth and good weather. There is still quite some ice on their meadow, so they are training to skate and walk very carefully. Not yet good enough conditions to run and play, but that will come soon.
The riding- and traininghorses are enjoying the good weather too, being outside most of the day now. Farsæll had a day off today, which he spent in the big fence together with his friend Magnús. There was enough to do and see for him (he had a good look at the horses in the neighbourfence), so I think he had a really good day.

Great weekend

The last days have been busy here, both connected to our "horselife" and "not-horselife".
On Thursday we took part in the local pub-quiz, just to win the youth and walk home with 2 six-packs of beer. Fridayevening we meet our co-workers to play cards (and of course win them emoticon).
Saturday we used the wonderful weather to go riding and train our horses outside. In the evening we were invited to Þórrablót in Aðaldalur. We meet a lot of friends, sang a lot of songs and ate a lot of traditional food (including rotten shark). Oh and don't forget: a lot of dancing...

Today we got a nice phonecall inviting us for a ride on ice. Difficult to say no, when you get a chance like that. So we put Magnús and List in the trailer and went to Helluland to meet Kiddi. The weather was perfect, sunshine, no wind, temperatures around 0°C. The horses were a bit shy and careful in the beginning, but they accustomed soon to the new underground and showed themselves at their best.
Kiddi and Ingólfur changed horses when we came back, but I prefered to use the daylight and take a few pics of Kiddi's foals.
Getting hot coffee and fresh wafers afterwards just topped the afternoon.

Northernlights

Tonight the sky was full of amazingly beautiful Northernlights dancing front and back right over Húsavík. I used the oppurtunity to try my camera and got some quite ok pics. Still they cannot capture the entire beauty of this wonder of nature.
