Safe Place

Well, today our visitors from Austria travelled on to the southwest of Iceland to stay at the farm they both worked at a few years ago. So we went to Akureyri in the morning and after a quick shopping stop in Bonus we had to say Goodbye and hope to meet again soon!
Then we went to get the mares and foals to have them at a safe place during night as we didn't want to risk any accident or injury because of the lots and lots of fireworks going on here during New Year's Eve.
It was not so easy to catch our mares, especially Ýndi didn't want to get caught and so Gisli, his son Einar and we had quite a job to get her. But in the end we managed.
We walked them over the big field and up to the riding hall in Saltvík where they were spending the night.
Just have a look at the pics!

A new friend for Púki

Today we went to get Púki a new friend as it is not good to be alone for budgies. A boy here in town breeds budgies and luckily had 3 young ones for sale.
So Hjördís (she was allowed to choose), Ingólfur and I went to have a look at the young rascals.
When we arrived Brynjar showed us his budgies, who live in a really big cage in the garage. 2 adults and 3 young ones were having fun, 1 hen was sitting on her eggs. Brynjar took a green male out of the cage and we were all surprised that he was already so tame. Hjördís was really quiet and just watching the birds but you could see that she liked that one especially. The other 2 young ones were still with their baby-feathers and not as tame as the other one. So we decided to take the tame, green male one.
First we put him in a different cage so Púki and he could have a look at each other from a bit of distance. In the evening they were allowed together and Púki was really really happy, just following the new one everywhere.
That one still needed a name... Hjördís named him "Grettir" which is the icelandic name for "Garfield".
So we'll see how these two guys go along together...

Visitors from Austria

8.30 in the morning two tired visitors from Austria arrived in Akureyri. Mira and Max had a quite long journey till they arrived here with us in the north. They'll stay until 31.12 and visit a friend in the southwest afterwards.
We'll try to show them a bit here, go to the Blue Lagoon at Lake Mývatn and maybe visit a few horsefarms.
We are looking forward to spend a few interesting days together!

Púki

Well, what to say about Púki... It becomes clearer everyday that he really deserves his name... He is a little devil and most of the time up to nonsense. He already behaves like he spent years with us, not only nearly 2 weeks.
When we get visitors he of course has to try to land on their heads, if the person likes it or not. He loves to be with Ingólfur (he's not always so happy about that), sit on his head or try to steal his food.
Púki is more a magpie than a budgie, always hunting glittering things. Golden earrings are just perfect for him to play with and so Ingó's mum had an unexpected visitor on her shoulder... He even tried to climb on her glasses...
Now he has a new favourite place: the shiny top of our confectglass. Not easy to land on it but he's getting better and better at it. And what could be better for this little selfloving parrot than his own picture reflected in gold?
Well, we are quite nosy what else he's going to show us in future!

Christmas

We wish all our friends a very merry christmas!
Hope you have a good time with your family and friends (two and fourlegged)!

Our horses got a big box of cookies as christmaspresent and were quite happy about that.

Trott

Today we tried to let Bragur trott with a rider on his back. First we started as usuall to let him trott with the saddle but without rider on the long rein, which worked just fine.
Then I went on back and Ingólfur had him on the rein. Bragur was a bit tense in the beginning but started to relax soon. When we tried to let him trott, he was just tölting, so Ingólfur decided to take the long rein off and just let me try alone.
Bragur was offering tölt and even canter in the riding hall and started to relax a bit while running. But no trott... But suddenly he did a few steps in trott and of course he got a small reward for that. Playing along a bit with him he realised that he was allowed to trott and started to trott straight from walk nearly everytime asked for. He always just took a few steps, but it's definitely something to work on!
Then Ingólfur went on back and tried and after a short time, it worked with him on back too!
We are both looking forward to train Bragur's trott more and make him a good fivegaiter!

The newcomers

The two foals, that arrived yesterday, successfully survived their first night with our horses. When I went today in the morning to have a look if they are ok, I first couldn't see them (it was still dark and our horses were laying and sleeping) but then when I took a second look, they were laying close to our horses fast asleep.
In the afternoon they were already allowed to eat close by and so I think there will be no problem to have them there.
By the way: the two young ladies have already names...
Mieke's foal (the darker one) is named Jódís, which means "sister" and may have meant "horse goddess".
Renske's foal got the name Alrún, which is a varient of the woman's name Ölrún or means "princess"

The training starts

After taking in the horses last saturday and handling them a bit in the meantime, the training for Bragur and Hekla has started. Yesterday we just let them run free a bit and had a look what they were offering.
Hekla was trotting and gallopping small circles, Bragur was showing good trott in high speed.
Today we let Bragur run on the long rein, first without then with saddle. The aim of all this is, that he learns to relax during work and realises, that he is allowed to trott, even with a saddle and in the next step with a rider on his back. We hope things keep going as well as they are at the moment and he'll be a relaxed, easygoing ridinghorse soon.

Today Mieke's and Renskes foals from Kelduland/Skagafjörður arrived here and will stay with our mares and foals. Both foals are yellow dun mares. Mieke's is a bit darker than Renske's. At the moment they stick together like twins and keep a bit away from our horses (ok, Perla was chasing them a bit...), but I think that will soon change.
Now the only one missing here is Farsæll...

Well, I had a little helper today when I was wrapping up Christmas gifts. Púki definitely wanted to join in the action and I had to take care not to wrap him up...
In the evening he was surprising our guests by taking a rest on their heads after a short flight. Funny to see their faces!

New cage

Well, today the big cage for Púki arrived and what should I say... It was really really big...
Too big for one budgie and even for two far too big, but the main problem was, that it was totally out of angle and 2 of the feet were broken during transport.
So we decided to send it back and look for something fitting better for Púki. In the meantime he'll have to stay in his small cage but is allowed outside as often as possible.

First steps

Now it is time for Ögn to learn to be a wellbehaved riding horse!
Today we trained a bit to lift the legs and stand still while being brushed. She was a bit uneasy about that at first but is learning fast and so it was no problem at all! We'll go on with taking her out, brushing and leading her now every day and see  how things are going.
Bragur had to go to the beauty salon today!
He has so much mane that it is better to part it in two and that happened today. He was really well behaving and it looked like he enjoyed all this extra attention. A few pics are to be seen in "Splitting Bragur's mane".

New inhabitant

Since today we have a new inhabitant in our flat!
A budgie joined us today and will hopefully feel at home here soon.
His name is Púki which means "little devil". It looks like he's deserving that name a bit as he's sometimes trying to bite before he decides to jump on the fingers.
Now we'll order a bigger cage and then get a friend for him. Maybe name that one angel
We hope everything will just go fine with him.

Bye bye

Yesterday we had to say Goodbye to our guests!
Gisli took them to the place where they are going to stay during wintertime. We hope that they have a good time there and come back healthy in springtime.
Now our horses have their hey for themselves and don't have to share .
But not for long as Farsæll and 2 other foals should arrive in the next weeks. Then we have alltogether 6 foals running around...

Going for a visit

Today we went to see how our horses are doing and give them some extra food. Especially Perla should get a bit more as she's with foal and her foal from this year is still drinking from her.
She likes to get this extra food, but unfortunately the others too. So we let her eat behind the shelter and I take care that the other horses get a bit extra too and don't disturb her while eating.
We tried to give them mash again and some liked it a lot and others not so much. That made us change the recipe a bit and today they ate everything of it, not a crumb left... You can see in the pics from december how some of them try to defend the bowl with the rest of the mash... Must have been good!
Afterwards we wanted to visit our friend Dóri and his family near Ásbyrgi. On the way we took a short walk through Ásbyrgi and of course took some pics. You can find them in "Landscape" and "Ásbyrgi in wintertime".
I can only recomend to visit this beautiful place in wintertime too, not as crowded as in summer.
Well, we were a bit unlucky as Dóri was not home when we arrived, but at least his dog greeted us happily.
When we arrived back in Húsavík we had the opportunity to watch Gilsi a bit training his stallions. Hope they keep on doing well during training!

Guests

We have 4 new guests in our fence!
Yesterday our friend Gisli brought 2 of his broodmares and 2 one year old mares into our fence.
They'll stay together with our horses now and make the herd a bit bigger.

When we put the 2 youngsters inside, the whole herd was running like crazy, chasing the newcomers a bit, but no harm was done. See the video "Putting new horses in the herd"
Shortly after they were all back to their routine and were eating like there's no tomorrow...
