Æskan og hesturinn

It is done! We are back from a great 2 days trip to Akureyri with 12 horses, around 19 kids (they never stood still long enough to count them all) and 12 grown ups.

Our trip started on friday, 1st of may, around 5 in the afternoon (as planned ;-)) from Saltvík. Saddles and tack were already in the trailer, our costumes too, just the horses had to be set in (Bjarni, Kiddi, Sæsi and Ingólfur took care of that). The kids went into the bus and Óli was the lucky driver who had to entertain them on the trip. Sigga helped him out with that and was singing a couple of songs with them.
First stop in Akureyri was the school were we were staying in the sportshall. We unloaded our luggage and food, reserved sleeping places and then went out to have fabulous dinner in Greifinn. We had a pizza-buffet, which everybody really liked and even took the leftovers with us to finish them after training. During dinner we watched "Æskan og hesturinn 2006" on the big screen to see what other have showed before.
Then we went straight to train in the huge riding hall to see if everything is working the way it should. We were lucky and didn't have to wait at all to start training. Everybody showed up in their new "Saltvík"-jackets, which looked in fact great!
The kids did a great job, but then came the bad news that our programm is nearly 9 minutes long, which is 3 times the time we were allowed to have... So we had to shorten and change the programm, which the kids didn't like too much and one or the other was thinking about not performing at all. But they tried the changed programm (including me as their trainer running in front to show the way...) and it went so well, that everybody was cheerful again and looking forward to perform the next day.

After a good nights sleep (that in fact depended on the matrass you had...) the kids and a bunch of parents went to the swimming pool, while others tried to organise the missing jackets (we needed more than we had ordered).
Around 12 everybody met in the stable to start brushing the horses, fixing hairstyles, dressing up and more. It was really nice to see how many more helpers came today and everybody working hand in hand, eventhough it was little room. Everybody had grilled sandwiches and something to drink and around 40 sandwiches were eaten (even the horses tried to get some!).
As we were after the break in the show, the whole bunch could go and watch the first part.

The show started with the flagride, which Guðbjörg, Sif and Thelma took part in the first show, but Iðunn, Dagny Anna and Hulda Ósk in the second. Then Sigrún Högna, Axel, Guðrun María, Þórunn and Hjördís took part in the youngest kids group that was partly leaded by grownups. Most of our kids just rode alone, the leaders just walking next to the horse. Sigrún Högna and Númi had a special moment in the second show as Óli didn't hold Númi and so he went with Sigrún to have a closer look at the audience and get special cheers and waves just for himself ;-). So even our youngest riders had already their first big show!
When the break started, our bunch just ran up to the stable to get everything ready. You could see how tense they were in their faces, eventhough some tried to joke over it. Then we had to wait and wait and wait as we were nearly the last group to perform. The kids went in the bus to the riding hall, the horses were brought by our great helpers! In the meantime the weather had become quite stormy and it was no fun to wait outside with all the sand blowing around!
Well, our moment came and our performers (Dagny Anna, Iðunn, Sigga, Hulda Ósk, Atli Björn, Sif, Sigurjóna, Thelma Dögg, Hrund, Elin, Viktoria and Guðbjörg) were tense, but ready to show themselves at their best! And they did! It was nice to watch them and to see how they started to get more selfconfident during the ride and in the end, everybody was enjoying himself and smiling over the whole face.
The second show went as fine as the first one, eventhough there was one small mistake, but the kids managed to "ride" over it.
Afterwards, they would have been ready to show it a third and fourth time, as it was soooooo much fun!

Our hometrip was without any special events, except for Óli being the best busdriver ever and stopping in Hagkaup to get a lot of sweets for the kids! You can imagine what was going on in the bus during the trip...
