Mývatn Open 2012

Fridayevening we cleaned Magnús and Negla thoroughly, cleaned their mane and tail and tried to get out as much winterfur as possible. They were nice and shiny afterwards, ready for their big day on Saturday.
Well, Saturdaymorning came, we got up early, got ourselves ready, packed enough food and hot drinks, extrablankets for the horses, videocameras, my camera and went to Saltvík. Somehow, the horses were not as clean as the evening before, but no reason to panic. Combed them again, put a rug on each horse, taped Negla's hooves white, so it would look like she is having some kind of boots, which she actually doesn't need, put hay and water for the horses in the trailer, loaded the horses and off we went to Mývatn. On the way we picked up Sigga, who was going to come with us and Hjördís.
I decided to just be the photographer and delay List's and my first real competition on ice a bit more. We are in no hurry, are we?

Ingólfur and Magnús took part in Tölt B, which is the competition for not so expierenced horses and/or riders. It went quite well, except for the fact that Magnús was a bit afraid of creaks in the ice when he was supposed to go faster and started to gallop. But I got quite nice pics of them before.
Iðunn and Mína did very well too, but I think it was a bit cold in white riding trousers...
María Marta took part with 2 horses and managed to win Tölt B the second year in a row on Víkingur. Congratulations!
I was a bit shocked that a horse, that was on clear pace instead of fast tölt, made it to the finals! You find a picture of proof in the album, it is a red horse.

There were around 30 riders in Tölt A, some of course with more than one horse. Bjarni Páll and Góði were the first ones in the track, followed by Magnús Bragi/Heiðar and Guðmundur Karl/Sóldís.
Ingólfur and Negla did very well this time, no big mistakes and a score of 6,33. Not enough for the finals, but enough to feel very well about it ;)
Einar Víðir showed 2 horses and made it to the finals with one of them, the mare Líf frá Kotströnd. I would have seen him a bit more in front after watching the finals, but not the judges.
Toggi competed too on a mare from Kotströnd, but it didn't work out for him as well as it did for Einar. Bjarni Páll rode another horse, which he doesn't know so well yet. It was a young gelding, son of Glampi frá Vatnsleysu. I infact liked him quite well and we'll see what future brings for the two of them.
My favourite and the winner of Tölt A, were Magnús Bragi and Óskasteinn frá Íbishóli. They were dancing over the ice and it was easy to see for everybody, how willing and powerful Óskasteinn is.

The last thing I watched was the stallionscompetition. It was getting very windy, I'd even call it stormy and we decided to skip pace and go home instead.
There were 6 stallions taking part (the other 3 didn't show up) and our friend Kiddi and his stallion Djákni made it to the finals, but lost a place there. After seeing 5 of the stallions together in the track, I'm not sure about what to think about the judges decision. I would have seen Djákni a bit more in front, second place for my taste. But well, I'm no judge.
Magnús Bragi won again, this time on Vafi frá Ysta-Mói, son of Gustur frá Hóli.

Alltogether it was a very interesting day on ice, many good horses, the weather could have been better, but it wasn't too cold. We were tired when we came home, the horses enjoying to roll over in the riding hall, taking a sandbath like chickens. Magnús and Negla will get a few days holiday now.
Have a look at the albums, there's a lot to see.
