The horsetraining

is taking an end after approximately 2 months and all the youngsters are getting a good break now. Kósi will enjoy his herdlife until next autumn, but most of the others will come inside again next spring to keep them in shape and teach them a few new things. It was fun to work with each of them, all these different characters! Embla, Kósi and Nökkvi were ridden inside and respond very well to the basic comands. Prímus and Sæla learned the basics in working in hand, longeing with and without the rider and so much more. Their next step will be to be taken as handhorses with a rider in spring to get more balance and stamina. I attach a pic of Kósi and one of Sæla.

Northernlights

are getting more and more intensive these days. Yesterday I missed them during being in the stable, but today I grabbed my camera and my tripod with me. I was surprised, how early they were visible as ususally you'd expect them around midnight, but theses were very visible at 18.30. Hope you like the pics and the short video I made.

Ísólfsstaðir

As I already told you before, the ridinghorses spending their vacation at Ísólfsstaðir. It's not just our horses there, but those of Magnús and Bjössi, too. Today it was time to move Maggi's horses and we decided to take 2 trips and take Aldís on the second, too.
But as things never turn out the way you expect, we had to do a lot of other things before taking the first trip to Ísólfsstaðir. Driving to Maggi's field we spotted 3 loose horses, to be precise a reddun mare, a bluedun mare and a red foal. Our horses! Fortunately they weren't close to the road, just grazing and not on the run. When Vordís realized, we were on our way to catch her, she decided it would be safer to move slowly away and started walking towards the riding hall, passing it. I sneaked on the other side and was lucky to get in front of them. It looked like she was relieved to see me, came and allowed me to grab her easily. Magnús took Aldís and Fönix just followed. In the meantime, Ingólfur checked the fence and repaired both gates. We have no idea what happened, but I wouldn't be surprised if somebody was hunting nearby and the horses got scared by the gunshot.
With our horses securely in their fence again, we grabbed Þokkadís and Ísak, realizing, that Glói was hurt and bleeding a bit. So we left him in the field and called the vet.
Ísak and Þokkadís were happy to go to the big pasture and meet the others. Glói on the other hand had to go to the stable, where the vet sewed his wound and gave him antibiotics. He'll have to stay inside for a few days until the stichtes get removed.
What a day!

Fönix

Hjördís and me visited Vordís, Aldís and Fönix today. They are on around 2,5 ha with enough grass and a good shelter. Fönix has grown a lot during summer and gets nosier and nosier. Of course, he had to check out Hjördís, but was not keen on being touched himself. Aldís on the other hand, enjoyed a really good clap and scratch.

Autumnwork

Besides training horses, there are a lot of other things to do in autumn.
For instance moving the outsidehorses to safe places fitting their needs. This means: the very well fed ridinghorses go to the huge fields at Ísólfsstaðir, where they can roam around on about 100 ha and find the best straws. This will keep them a bit in shape and they enjoy their freedom and just being horses. Of course they are closely watched and controlled every day by the farmer there.
Vordís and Fönix are going to the big field near the sea, where there is good shelter and where we'll start to feed hay early. They'll be joined later by Fjördís and Prímus, when he's finished his first training. At the moment, Aldís keeps them company.
Sigtýr and "his mares" are staying at Haga at the moment and will stay there as long as there's enough grass and river Laxá doesn't flood the area. There's very good natural shelter and they are closely watched by the farmer there. Þyrnirós and her brother Þokki are still at Hólmavað, but will soon go to Ísólfsstaðir, Þokki taking a small stop-over inside to fresh up his haltertraining.
Needless to say, that all the horses are being dewormed, too.

Trainingseason

As usual we took some trainingshorses inside to start them or continue, where we stopped last autumn.
This year there will be 3 of our own horses and 4 which don't belong to us.

The candidates are:

Prímus frá Bjarnastöðum (F: Gustur frá Lækjarbakka, M: Hespa frá Bjarnastöðum), born 2010, just started his training. Small horse - big character!

Sæla frá Hellulandi (F: Geisli frá Sælukoti, M: Skömm frá Hellulandi), born 2010, just started her training. Relaxed and nosy. Belongs to Jörg in Austria.

Roði frá Hellulandi (F: Djákni frá Hellulandi, M: Glæta frá Hellulandi), born 2010, just started. Reminds us a bit of his mum. Belongs to Bjössi, who'll train him himself.

You can see, there'll be enough to do the next weeks. Keep you informed!

Walk on the beach

Sundaymorning, sunshine and a light breeze - what would you want more to go for a walk.
Ingólfur took Hjördís and me to a beach we haven't been before. After the storm there was a lot of debris on the beach, so lots of stuff to look at and look through - shells, tang and a lot more.
The walk on the beach was refreshing and at the end we had a look at a beautiful waterfall. Whilst Hjördís and Ingólfur had a closer look at it, they were closely watched by a raven. Back home we had delicious pumpkinsoup before we went for further excursions.

Laufskálarétt

This weekend we joined our friends at Miðsitja for the annual horseroundup Laufskálarétt in Skagafjörður. Fridayevening was a show in Sauðárkrókur, where riders from near and far showed their best horses. Of course there was a pacerace through the ridinghall. Þórarinn Eymundsson and Bragur took part and managed to win this event at 4,77 seconds. Congrats!
Saturdaymorning we put the horses on two trailers and joined the farmers gathering their horses. Ingólfur got Aría, the mare he rode there last year, and I got Hilmir, Ingunn's horse. We really enjoyed the ride in this beautiful landscape with good friends. I think there were in fact more riders than freeroaming horses... Anyway it was very nice to stop, listen to the riders sing, chat a bit and so on.
In the evening we got delicious dinner and had a good party. Thanks for us and hopefully again next year!

Sigtýr & Þrá

After being castrated on 28th of August Sigtýr was ready to be moved to Haga. Ögn was already there, List supposed to go with him and Þrá was due to arrive from the East. It was a very interesting day for young Fjördís, getting to know all these new horses. They just ran a bit and when we left they were already grazing together.

Hraunsrétt

After meeting the herd and the riders yesterday at Geitafell it was time to sort the sheep today. I was lucky and got all 3 of them back, eventhough the little ewe didn't follow her mum as she was supposed to. But in fact she has been like that just from the start. Kristján found Snilld in the arena and shortly after that I grabbed her little ram. She hasn't changed a bit during summer and started to beg for food right away. And she started to drink beer... Bit young to do that!

Northernlights

We had amazing Northernlights and I tried to make a small video. Hope you like it.

Sheeproundup

Time to go to the mountains and collect the sheep from their summerpasture. Ingólfur, Bjössi and a few others rode to Þeistareykir today and will start gathering the sheep early tomorrow morning. I hope to get my sheep and its lambs healthy back. Looking forward to sorting them on Sunday. As you can see the guys had quite some fun on their way to the hut. That's the way it should be!

How to...

...get your lambs home, when they are grazing on an island. Bensi and Kristján went to fetch 2 lambs they kept on a small island in river Laxá over the summer. Just see how they did it!

Volcanic eruption

Finally there is an eruption in Iceland, but people are not allowed to go close yet. So we went as close as we could and took some pics from very far away. Nevertheless you can imagine, how powerful nature is.

Krakkareiðtúr Grana

Today the local riding club offered all the kids to come together, go for a ride, play games in the ridinghall and have some pizza.
We were amazed to see how many joined and it was great to watch them having a lot of fun. Ingólfur and Hjördís joined the group and I think they both really liked it.
