30.march and still winter...

... and what a winterday today! Yesterday the weather started to be quite stormy and during night it was snowing a lot. In the morning you could hardly see anything else than white outside.
Eventhough the weather was not the best, there was school today (with those that managed to come) and it was adventurous to try to come through to work. At least there was not much traffic emoticon
After school we took a drive through town to take pics and have a look how others coope with the weather. Some kids were having fun jumping from a roof into the big snowpiles, others were trying to dig out their cars and some where driven home by the local rescueteam. But have a look yourself, we put some pics in a new album!

Fura and Skömm sold!

Fura frá Bjarnastöðum and Skömm frá Hellulandi are both sold.
Fura already went to Germany, where she'll spend the next years in company of other foals and youngsters to hopefully become a good competition/breeding horse.
Skömm will stay for a while here in Iceland and probably be bred to a good stallion during summer. Maybe she's going to Austria next autumn.

New saleshorses

We are happy to be able to present you 3 promising mares on our salespage now!
The 3 ladies Tinna, Negla and Hnota are all bred and trained by our friend Kristján (Kiddi) in Helluland. They are showing themselves nice and promising and could be interesting for you if you are looking for a breeding/competitionhorse with good pedigree or just a friend for your spare time.

Training the young horses

There is a lot going on in Saltvík right now, the stable is filled up with horses and everybody working and training. We are no exeption and have enough to do with training 3 young horses.
Leira, a palomino mare, is in ownership of Tora and Kolli in Hraunkót. She has been with us for the last 2 months and we will end her training soon so she can have her well earned break. I took her out as a handhorse for the first time today and that went fine, so we'll do that regularly now.

Then there are Óríon and List, both out off Keilir frá Miðsitju and in ownership of Kristján (Kiddi). Eventhough they are really closely related (their mothers are mother and daughter), they are quite different in looks. Óríon is a big, lightbuilt gelding while List is rather small, but with a fine building.
We just started to work them last week and it is going fine with both and they are learning really fast. Today we put the saddle on for the first time, it was no problem to do that and let them run with the saddle after that. So we are looking forward how they'll develop!

What a beautiful day...

Finally, after a period of snowstorms and cold temperatures, the weather was just perfect today! No wind, + 4°C and last but not least SUNSHINE!!!
So we used the day to go to the countryside and have fun. First we went on a short snowscootertrip, then we had a look at Djákni frá Hellulandi (I updated his picturealbum now) and took a ride with Kiddi and his daughters. On the way back we stopped in Garður and had coffee and a nice chat with Enrice and Gummi.
Well, that's the way sundays should be!

Mývatn Open 2009

As it is already tradition, Mývatn Open took place today, the second saturday in march. The weather in Húsavík was perfect, when we started our trip with Bragur in the trailer, but unfortunately it was not as nice and fairly cold in Mývatn area.
Ingólfur and Bragur took part in Tölt B, which went not as good as it could have, but that's just something to work on.
In Tölt A were quite many starters and 7 made it to the finals, including Mette Manseth, whose horse hurt itself during the competition and so did not start in the finals.
The stallionstest was a new kind of test and 8 stallions took the challenge to show themselves in slow tölt, medium tölt, trott, fast tölt or pace and 2 length of what they can do best. It was quite a surprise when Mette let her stallion Háttur frá Þúfum perform Spanish Walk and people were clapping a lot for that.
Last test of the day was the pace competition. 9 horses took part, one of them was Ester frá Hólum, who was quite successful on Landsmót 2008.
Bjarni Páll had even signed in with 2 horses, Djarfur, his wellknown spotted pacer and Funi, his newcomer. Ingólfur and Bragur had to try that too of course and they did their job well!
Just Stefán Birgir on Blakkur frá Árgerði and Þórarinn on Ester were faster than these two!
The pics are online, the videos will hopefully follow soon!

Foalshow in Saltvík

After long discussions we finally managed to organise a foal and young stallion show in Saltvík.
The weather was great, 27 foals and 8 young stallions were signed into the show. Of course Farsæll had to be shown too emoticon
Around 100 people were visiting Saltvík, enjoying the show, coffe and cakes. Sometimes it was nearly impossible to get through in the stable...

The marefoals were first to be shown. 6 of 15 mares were daughters of Geisli frá Sælukoti, so it was not a too big surprise that there were 2 of them in the best 3.

1.  Ygla frá Litlu-Reykjum (F: Geisli, Sælukoti, M: Stikla, Hellulandi)
2. Kreppa frá Miklagarðshestum (F: Frami, Ánastöðum, M: Elding, Einifelli)
3. Kolbrá frá Jaðri (F: Geisli, Sælukoti, M: Irpa, Jaðri)
4.+5. Hamradís frá Garði (F: Bláskeggur, Hrafnkellstöðum, M: Esja, Syðri-Ey)
Katla frá Stóru-Laugum (F: Hamar, Stóru-Laugum, M. Kría,Hamrafossi)

Then the 12 stallionfoals had their big moment. 2 of the best 3 were sons of Vökull frá Bergsstöðum, a young promising grey stallion, which won the foalshow a few years ago.

1.  Kraftur frá Litlu-Reykjum (F: Vökull, Bergsstöðum, M: Kvika, Hjaltastöðum)
2. Þengill frá Stóru-Laugum (F: Markús, Langholtsparti, M: Glíma, Árbakka)
3. Galdur frá Heiðargerði (F: Vökull, Bergsstöðum, M: Þula, Ysta-Hvammi)
4.+5. Veigur frá Bjarnastöðum (F: Jakob, Árbæ, M: Keila, Bjarnastöðum)
Búi frá Húsavík (F: Hróður, Refsstöðum, M: Dúsa, Húsavík)

The young stallions were shown one by one and Djákni frá Hellulandi
(F: Hágangur, Narfastöðum, M: Myrká, Hellulandi) showed himself especially well with a lot of energy and high movements.
