Saleshorses
We have 3 new saleshorses on our homepage. All of them young and promising breeding/competitionhorses with excellent pedigree. 2 mares and a young stallion, which is son of Hróður frá Refsstöðum. If you are interested in freshing your breeding group up a bit, that could be your chance.
Hnota frá Hellulandi is sold to Norway and will start her trip in autumn, maybe even covered with a good stallion.

Finally - new pics
The last days I was taking quite a lot of pics but didn't take the time to put them online. Well, now they are finally in: pics of the Birdlife around Húsavík (not so easy to spot all the birds on the pics), lambs in all sizes and last but not least Farsæll. Enjoy watching them!

Lucky!
When I went to feed our horses in the morning, I didn't know that I'd become quite lucky just short after. Arriving in Saltvík I saw a mare of our stable-neighbour laying and already thought she looked like giving birth. So I might be lucky to see a newboarn foal in a short while.
Well, I fed our horses and did a few more things in the stable, when Gisli arrived. We both had a look at the mare from far away and she was behaving a bit strange, rolling over and definitely not feeling good. So we decided to take a walk and have a look what was going on. Unfortunately I left my camera in the car.
When we arrived, the frontlegs and part of the head were visible. The mare stood up and came towards us, just to lay down in front of us and start pressing again. She seemed quite exhausted already, but no wonder as it was a quite big foal. We called the owner of the mare and waited till she arrived. By then the mare had finally managed to give birth and Gisli cleaned the foal's nose so it could breath properly.
The mare took a short rest and started then immediately to clean her newborn. Just 10 minutes later both were already standing and the foal on the way to the "milk-bar".
As you can imagine I was happy and felt honoured to be witness of this! Not so often you have chance to see that.

List and Óríon
Time is flying when you have something interesting and funny to do! And it is indeed funny and interesting to work with List and Óríon, the two young horses we have in training.
As they are both eager and quick to learn we have started to go for longer rides with them to build up muscels and get them in good shape.
Ingólfur and Óríon were brave and went out without a "safety line", which means I didn't take Óríon as a handhorse the first time he went for an outside trip. It went very well and we started to go for a bigger circle yesterday.
List and I were not that brave, we decided to be on the "safety line" first. List behaved just fine on the first trip. She is listening well and tries to do what I ask her to. Yesterday we went again and short before we came home, we took the "safety line" off and followed Ingólfur and Hugsun home.
As you can imagine, we are really happy that everything is going well with the youngsters and that they interested and seem to enjoy work.

Daily life
Nothing special to blogg about, everything is calm and things go their usual way. Most of the days we go for a long ride to make our ridinghorses fit for the longer tours in summer and we often take the 2 youngsters List and Orion along to give them some exercise and get them used to follow as a handhorse. They are both started under the saddle and Orion even had his first trip outside the ridinghall, which he did just fine. He is not scared of anything and always looking forward to do something new. List is not that far yet as we wanted to use a bit more time in working on her worse side. But we are already riding a few circles in the ridinghall and one of the next days she'll go out as a ridden handhorse. Hopefully enough she won't be so cheerful that she starts hopping again ;-)

Surprise!
Well, we were quite surprised when the owner of Negla called and asked us to take her off the saleslist because of an unexpected development... But in fact it was a sweet secret that Negla kept over the winter: she's getting a foal in 4-6 weeks!
Obviously one of the 1year old stallions was busy last spring covering some mares. It will be interesting, how many unexpected foals will be born in Helluland this spring!

Lambingseason
The lambinseason is starting now and today we met some young lambs in a lot of different colours. They were everything but shy and had a quite strange taste in food... It looked like shoes and ridingtrousers are tastier than milk and hay. We hope for their owner, that their taste will change, otherwise it'll be really expensive to feed them

Ketill is sold!
Ketill frá Bjarnastöðum is sold to a couple in Reykjavík, who'll use him mainly as a spectacular ridinghorse. We hope they are getting along well and have a lot of fun together!

Right place, right time...
When we decided to use the beautiful weather to have another look at Ára and take a video, we didn't know that we would become lifesavers doing so.
The 5 horses that were supposed to be on the field were nowhere to see when we arrived. First we tought, they were moved to another fence but then we saw that the fence between the field and the forrest was broken so we decided to have a look above the forrest.
Well, there they were, but just 4 of them. We started to take pics and film, when Ingólfur more or less accidentally found the pregnant mare, that was with the youngsters, standing in the river and not able to come out again. She broke through the snow and was more or less caught in that place. Ingólfur went to inform her owners and organise help.
When he came back he brought a halter and we managed to put it on the mare (she didn't like that so much, but had no choice) and when Ingólfur tried to turn her, she managed to climb up out off the river! We didn't think it would be so easy to get her out.
Then the helpers arrived with a lot of ropes, which were thanks god not necessary. The mare looked fine, but was quite hungry. As the horses were not supposed to be in that field, 2 men drove them back down to their own field and fixed the fence so they wouldn't go again.
We hope the best for the mare and her unborn foal, which is hopefully unharmed.
I don't want to think about what would have happened to both of them if we wouldn't have had a look at Ára accidentally...

Æskan og hesturinn
It is done! We are back from a great 2 days trip to Akureyri with 12 horses, around 19 kids (they never stood still long enough to count them all) and 12 grown ups.
Our trip started on friday, 1st of may, around 5 in the afternoon (as planned ;-)) from Saltvík. Saddles and tack were already in the trailer, our costumes too, just the horses had to be set in (Bjarni, Kiddi, Sæsi and Ingólfur took care of that). The kids went into the bus and Óli was the lucky driver who had to entertain them on the trip. Sigga helped him out with that and was singing a couple of songs with them.
First stop in Akureyri was the school were we were staying in the sportshall. We unloaded our luggage and food, reserved sleeping places and then went out to have fabulous dinner in Greifinn. We had a pizza-buffet, which everybody really liked and even took the leftovers with us to finish them after training. During dinner we watched "Æskan og hesturinn 2006" on the big screen to see what other have showed before.
Then we went straight to train in the huge riding hall to see if everything is working the way it should. We were lucky and didn't have to wait at all to start training. Everybody showed up in their new "Saltvík"-jackets, which looked in fact great!
The kids did a great job, but then came the bad news that our programm is nearly 9 minutes long, which is 3 times the time we were allowed to have... So we had to shorten and change the programm, which the kids didn't like too much and one or the other was thinking about not performing at all. But they tried the changed programm (including me as their trainer running in front to show the way...) and it went so well, that everybody was cheerful again and looking forward to perform the next day.
After a good nights sleep (that in fact depended on the matrass you had...) the kids and a bunch of parents went to the swimming pool, while others tried to organise the missing jackets (we needed more than we had ordered).
Around 12 everybody met in the stable to start brushing the horses, fixing hairstyles, dressing up and more. It was really nice to see how many more helpers came today and everybody working hand in hand, eventhough it was little room. Everybody had grilled sandwiches and something to drink and around 40 sandwiches were eaten (even the horses tried to get some!).
As we were after the break in the show, the whole bunch could go and watch the first part.
The show started with the flagride, which Guðbjörg, Sif and Thelma took part in the first show, but Iðunn, Dagny Anna and Hulda Ósk in the second. Then Sigrún Högna, Axel, Guðrun María, Þórunn and Hjördís took part in the youngest kids group that was partly leaded by grownups. Most of our kids just rode alone, the leaders just walking next to the horse. Sigrún Högna and Númi had a special moment in the second show as Óli didn't hold Númi and so he went with Sigrún to have a closer look at the audience and get special cheers and waves just for himself ;-). So even our youngest riders had already their first big show!
When the break started, our bunch just ran up to the stable to get everything ready. You could see how tense they were in their faces, eventhough some tried to joke over it. Then we had to wait and wait and wait as we were nearly the last group to perform. The kids went in the bus to the riding hall, the horses were brought by our great helpers! In the meantime the weather had become quite stormy and it was no fun to wait outside with all the sand blowing around!
Well, our moment came and our performers (Dagny Anna, Iðunn, Sigga, Hulda Ósk, Atli Björn, Sif, Sigurjóna, Thelma Dögg, Hrund, Elin, Viktoria and Guðbjörg) were tense, but ready to show themselves at their best! And they did! It was nice to watch them and to see how they started to get more selfconfident during the ride and in the end, everybody was enjoying himself and smiling over the whole face.
The second show went as fine as the first one, eventhough there was one small mistake, but the kids managed to "ride" over it.
Afterwards, they would have been ready to show it a third and fourth time, as it was soooooo much fun!
Our hometrip was without any special events, except for Óli being the best busdriver ever and stopping in Hagkaup to get a lot of sweets for the kids! You can imagine what was going on in the bus during the trip...

Preparations...
The last days were busy in Saltvík, everybody preparing horses and tack for the big show tomorrow in Akureyri. 12 horses had to be combed and washed, saddles and bridles cleaned and so on.
Well, some of the horses were not so happy about takeing a shower, but they had to and so Vafi is finally brown and white spotted and not brown and dirty spotted... In fact the horses were really clean and nice to look at after washing, but not we... Hair and dirt all over ;-)
Ingólfur took Ögn and Hugsun inside to shoe them and start training them again. He started with a ride from our pasture to the stable and was nearly as fast as I was on car...
