Farsæll meeting his mares

Finally we finished the fence, put a huge hayroll in the field and collected the first mares that are supposed to meet Farsæll.
The way they were behaving most of them are ready for the stallion or close to that. So there'll be a lot to do for Farsæll.
When we released him into the field he was interested in getting to know the girls, taking quite a sprint to meet them. They were not that eager to get to know him, some of them greeting him with hard kicks. Others were really interested, following him and trying very hard to get his attention emoticon
We hope he'll serve all of them well and there will be beautiful foals in nice colours next spring.

Laxamýri

Hjördís has been with us the last days, helped a lot around the horses, having fun with her cousin Hrund and going for rides with her dad.
Today we went to Laxamýri to shoe 3 horses and used this perfect opportunity to have a look into the chickenstable and of course in the cowstable. Atli and Síf, parents of Sigga and Atli, are trying to have and breed as many colours and colourshades of cows and chickens as they can. In my eyes it is as important to keep the different colours and shades in cows and chickens as it is in horses and sheep. It would be a great loss to miss the rare colours out off the breed. I really enjoyed getting to know the different colours and learn a bit about genetics while Sigga and Hjördís had a good time feeding the calves. Think I'll have to take some pics of these colourful cows when they are outside in the pasture!

Sigtýr

The last days we were busy reorganising our herd, taking Sigtýr and Nökkvi in, driving Vordís, Embla, Pála and Jódís to the countryside, seperating the traininghorses from the others and so on.
Sigtýr and Nökkvi went through "Kindergarten", learned about the halter, being led and standing still tied to the wall. They did really well and were fast to understand what we wanted. All they've learned now will make handling them so much easier in the future.
Today we used the opportunity to drive Sigtýr to Helluland, where he is staying with another young stallion, son of Kappi frá Kommu. First we had to check the whole fence, quite some walk in bumpy area as the fence is around 1000m long in one direction.
After being released the guys went to check their new place and I think they'll have a lot to do eating all the grass in this huge field!
In the evening we took a drive to the countryside and had a nice surprise when we were passing the fence with Maggi's horses. A Short-eared Owl had taken place on one of the fencesticks and wasn't afraid of the car at all. So we could drive quite close and take a pic. But that wasn't the only owl we saw that evening. It was 3 alltogether!

News from Farsæll

We quite like the looks of Farsæll so we decided to show him for conformation. Ingólfur shoed him and I combed and shined before we brought him to Torfunes as they'd teach him how to stand right and how to behave when the judges have a good look. Erlingur showed him for us and everything went fine. My biggest sorrow was, that he's maybe behave stupidly as he is still so young, just 4 years old. But he stood like a rock when he was measured and his testicles checked eventhough it was a new place, a lot of horses around and a lot going on.
Then Erlingur and Bensi went to show him to the judges, which had a very close look at him, touching him here and there. I think it's quite a hard job to judge so many different horses in short time. He did fine and behaved very well in the huge riding hall in Akureyri.
Farsæll got an overall score for conformation of 7,92 with 8,5 for neck, which is definitely not so bad ;-) We had hoped for a bit better judgement, but he is still growing and things might look completely different next time!
Afterwards we took a small detour and had a look at 4 foals of Farsæll, born just a few days ago. 1 of them was a black and white pinto with a star, 1 black with 4 socks and a star, 1 reddun with at least 1 sock and a blaze and the last one pure black. It was nice to see these little fellows running around on tölt and trott, having fun teasing their mums. I attach some pics of them.

Vaka's daughter

A few days ago, Vaka frá Flugumýri, Bensi's mare gave birth to a healthy, pitchblack marefoal. We were so busy that we didn't manage to go and see her before and used a quiet eveninghour to do so. The young, still nameless, lady will probably get grey like her father Vökull. She is fullsister to Vigri, who is 2 years old now.
Hrund came with us to have a look and I took some nice pics of this exceptionally nosy foal!

A stableguest

As we like to have good and fresh air in the stable, the upperdoorhalves and the windows are open if the weather allows. That sometimes causes birds to fly inside and pay us a visit. Especially smaller birds use it from time to time as a refugee if the weather is worsening.
This time the visitor was a bit bigger... When I took Dalur out of his box I heard the noise of quite big wings and had a look, which bird came to visit now. It was a Ptarmigan! I was so lucky to have a camera at the stable and took this pic of it sitting on Bjössi's helmet.

Ladies' ridinglessons

The last weeks a few ladies from Húsavík and surroundings came for ridinglessons. At first for one or another it was a bit difficult and costed a lot of effort to overcome their fear of horses. But everyone managed and we had a lot of fun together! I really like teaching grown-ups as they ask quite different questions from those young riders are interested in. So it's good to have the chance to teach kids and adults.
During the last lesson we tried everything they learned and went for a long ridingtour. Everything went really well, nobody fell off (not even me...) and somebody was so nice to hide some rewardbeer for them on the way. While enjoying it, Ingólfur, Bjarni and Elsa joined us and we had a fast ride back to Saltvík.
Now we are just waiting for them to call and go for a ride!!!!
