Catch of the day

Now my brother's family's stay is nearly over. It has been a wonderful time having all of them here and I think the kids were able to experience a lot of things.

Early in the morning my brother entered the ship Soley ÞH-28 and went for his first trip as a fisherman with Jói, Ingólfur's brother in law. Think he had a lot to do and it was a big experience for him.
We of course had a close eye on them online and made it at the right time down to the harbour to check out the catch of the day. It was around 650 kg of fish they managed to get.

In the afternoon all of them got the possibility to ride a horse in the riding hall. That went well and everybody had a smile in his face afterwards.

Oh, not to forget! In the morning we got really nice visitors, Max and Lena. We went to see all our horses and had nice coffee afterwards.

Guests

We got visitors from Austria! My brother and his family are here and are going to stay for 2 weeks in Iceland. The weatherforecast isn't the best, but we are going to make the best out of it. For my nephew and niece it's their first stay here and I hope they'll enjoy it.

Due to this I won't be writing a lot here the next days! But I post some pics here from places we already have visited.

Photoworkshop

I just recently came home from my trip to Austria and spent a few days at Hùsavík before I went to a photoworkshop with Gígja Einarsdóttir at Þingeyrar.

When this workshop was advertised earlier this winter I thought about joining, talked to Ingólfur about it, thought a bit more and then I really was fast sending Helga an e-mail to enlist for it. I definitely do not regret going there!
It was 4 fantastic days with the probably best horsephotographer in Iceland at the moment. Gígja is doing a great job, had recently an exhibition in Copenhagen, which is going to move to the Worldchampionship for Icelandic Horses in Herning. You can take a glimpse at her work here.

We were 11 ladies and a guy taking part. It was an international group and the participants had a very different background in photography, but Gígja and Helgi took very good care of us, animated us to try new things and showed us how to finish the pics in Photoshop/Lightroom. Helga took care of all the delicious food for us and I think nobody was ever hungry during this workshop.
In the end all of us had to choose 3-5 pics to show to the others. It wasn't easy to choose from more than 2000 pics I took through these 4 days.
I'll put my favourites in an album for you to check out.

So if anybody here in Iceland is interested in getting pics of his/her favourite horse, just contact me. My friends in Austria/Europe maybe should contact Eva, who takes really good pics. Here you find her homepage.

Summerpasture

... for Fönix and Fjördís! Finally they probably thought.
They met their older sibblings at Hólmavað and after a short "Hello" they all ran off and had fun bucking and jumping.
I got some nice pics of them, especially of Þyrnirós, which is unfortunately for sale again.

Our foals were lucky, too and got a lot of visitors these last days. First Jón stopped by and today Ína and her daughters. Just the question, who was more interested in these visits.

Firmakeppni Grana

Beautiful weather was the perfect frame around our annual club competition. We tried the new ovaltrack and it seems to get better and better.
There were amazingly many participants and a lot of good horses. It was nice to see, how many kids took part and apparently had a lot of fun.
Afterwards we had some coffee and then a big group went for a nice evening ride.

Our foals got an unexpected visitor as Jón, Ingólfur's father, stopped by and we had a look at Snerpa and her brother. Jón was rather surprised, how easygoing both foals were.

New inhabitants

in the former chicken stable at Hólmavað. These piglets moved in a few days ago and are going to stay there as long as they need to be with a heating lamp. Both are really interested in food and digging in the ground. Liked me and my camera, too, could be something to eat. Soon they'll move to the barn where they can go in an out as they like.
Þyrnirós and Þokki have moved to the summer pasture, where they met Vordís and Mánahringur. They are going to enjoy their lives there for the next months.

Fönix

is getting his basic education right now and is therefore at the stable. He's a really fast learner and takes new things easy and relaxed. It's a pleasure to work with a youngster like this.
Soon he'll be castrated and then he'll take a trip to his summerpasture at Hólmavað.

Ridingschool

Our ridingclub Grani is really active having lessons for interested young riders, beginners and those already more experienced. We were asked and agreed to teach 2 groups of kids at the age of 6-8. It was not always easy, but we had a lot of fun and it was great to see, how much the kids learned and improved in these 5 days.

Foalvisit

As our foals are that much into humans, it's very nice to be able to give others the possibility to visit them and have a really close look. Today we got a visit from Hulda, Lára Sóley and Hulda Margrét. Hjördís was with us and showed her little cousin, how to find the right spot to scratch.

Open day

at the local riding hall. Both clubs, Grani and Þjálfi, invited the people living in and around Húsavík, to meet in the riding hall, watch horsefootball, take a short ride in the horsecarriage or be led a few rings on horseback inside. Of course you could buy coffee, hot chocolate and different cakes for a very low price.
There were definitely a lot more visitors than anybody had hoped for and we had a very, very nice day there. Hope we'll get a few new riders soon.
Afterwards we checked out our foals and both of them were really eager to inspect us and get a good scratch on the belly.

A quick visit

at Hólmavað and guess, who crossed my way? Or should I better say "who came running to beg for treats"?

Snilld and her twinboys, which were rather sceptically and stayed in a distance, had a look at us and of course she got some treats. Soon they'll go to a different place and hopefully not long after that up to the mountains.

Foals

We moved Ögn, List and their foals to the big seasidemeadow yesterday evening. There they get richer hay and fresh growing grass inbetween. Another advantage is the fact that Fönix can't get into their nerves and the foals have peace to play together without the big guy always interrupting.
Instead of these four we put Farsæll in the fence with Fönix and the mares. So maybe they'll play a bit.
Looks like the mares really enjoy the big field as they're just wandering around, trying the grass here and there. The foals are playing, running, sleeping and drinking. In fact we have a little milkthief. Ögn's son fetches himself a drink at both mares.
Snerpa discovered that humans aren't that dangerous at all and explored me, my camera and my clothes today.

News from Fönix

Now the foals are born, Fönix is not the number one anymore and has to share the attention.
He's not always happy about it and especially not happy about not being allowed to play with the foals. So he had to find another sparring partner and was lucky that Þrá was ready to take that place. Funny to watch a lady in her best years playing like crazy with an adolescent.

List is definitely not keen on playing

Þrá on the other hand is ready to play along

A name

After one week of reading through books, checking namelists online, writing down a lot of interesting names with even more interesting meanings and watching List's daughter a lot, we finally got a name for her.
First I was thinking about a name fitting to her colour and Eldlilja (Firelily) was one of my favourites, but soon I had to think about that again, as she didn't behave at all like a flower, too much power, running, jumping, bucking. So it had to be something more powerful.
In the end we chose the name Snerpa, which means "sharpness, briskness" and think it fits very well for this little bundle of power.

And number 2

Yesterday morning when we checked our foalmares, there still was no second foal, but we could see wax on Ögn's udder, which is a sign that it won't take too long (mostly between 24 and 48 hours) until the foal will be born. Most mares give birth during the night, so we decided to stay awake and try to watch.
Around 6.30, when we went home from the stable, she was still eating, just the way she was around 2 hours later, when we drove by on our way to put the ridinghorses into the stable. Still no signs of an oncoming birth 30 minutes later, so we stopped by our vet's stable, had a chat and some coffee. At about 22.30 we went back to our stable to feed the horses and could see, that Ögn had herself separated from the group. We already got ourselves comfortable with checking on her a few times during night, but in the end, there was no need to do that as she had started to be in labour. Our vet and his wife stopped on their way home, when they saw what was going on and so it was the four of us watching her. Hjördís and Ingólfur's father arrived shortly after she started and observed what was going on.
As the foal was rather big Ingólfur had to help a bit and dragged the foal out and in front of Ögn, so she could start cleaning it. She was rather tired, but after a moment she started to lick her little black colt.
He was, just like his dad, a bit clumsy in the beginning and didn't manage to get up straight away (I wouldn't either with all these long legs being tied together), but when we left he stood.
If you'd like to see the whole birth, have a look here.
