Íbishóll

Today we decided to change our daily routine and took a drive to Skagafjörður, where we visited Magnús Bragi Magnússon and Elisabeth Jansen at Íbishóll.
After a nice chat about different breedinglines, old and new stallions and a lot more, Magnús showed us their herd or better to say herds as they have their horses split up in a few groups according to age, gender and how much they are supposed to eat.
There's a special stallionfence with a colourful group of young stallions belonging to them or friends. The yearlings are in a seperate fence, just like the 2 and 3 year olds, the grown ups and last but not least the foalmares.
Last stop was the stable, where we had a look at Snillingur, who is Fönix father.
Ingólfur and Magnús were busy discussing the horses while I used the chance to take a lot of pics without being interrupted.

Still just one foal

...but that one running crazy!
List has enough to do to follow her energetic daughter. Just a question of time when she'll give up on that.

One landed - one to go

This morning a little something on long legs greeted us, when we checked our horses. List had given birth during the night.
Remember my guess? I was guessing for a yellow dun mare with a star. Well, I got one out of three, I was right with the gender. List's first foal is a little red mare with no markings (not even a few white hairs on the forehead, nothing).
When we checked her in the morning, she hadn't found out completely how to get a meal, but didn't give up and had mastered it later today, when we checked on them again. Think she's just drinking, sleeping and playing a bit, but mostly drinking and sleeping.
As far as I can see, she has a lot of tölt, so probably pace, too.
Now she only needs a fitting name...

There's an album with pics of her on our picturepage, just have a look.

Snilld & her lambs

I got a message in the morning, that Snilld had gotten her twinlambs. Of course I was rather nosy and eager to see them, but that had to wait until after dinner as we had to take care of our horses.
When I came into the stable, I was greeted happily and someone was waiting for treats. Luckily I had some, but they didn't last very long. It wasn't easy to get a glimpse or take pics of the lambs as Snilld was always trying to eat the camera or get a clap/scratch. At least she's not defending her lambs like some other ewes do and so it wasn't difficult to have a closer look at them, even lift them up.

By the way: I was right about the gender and colour! I got 2 white rams. Hope I'll be right with my foal, too. There I'd like to get a dun filly with a big star.

The flower weatherforecast

wasn't right at all! Still no spring, but a lot of snow :(
At least the days are getting longer and it's not really dark anymore.

If you'd like to have a look at the actual weather, just check out the Húsavík webcam.

Moving the horses

It was time to move the foalmares to another fence, where it will be easier for us to keep an eye on them.
We decided to walk them in two groups, first 4 on a halter and then 2 on a halter and 2 running free. Came a bit different, but worked well.
First we caught Þyrnirós, Prímus, Ögn and List. Fjördís was so nosy, that she followed the group, which was just fine.
Prímus moved into the fence with Farsæll, Ösp and the others, where he got a bit rough welcome, but was integrated after a few minutes.
While Ingólfur took care of this I kept walking with the 3 mares on the rope and Fjördís following loose. It was very nice to see how well behaved Þyrnirós is. Just walking like the other ladies and when she was irritated by something, just stopping, taking a look and then following me again. Never pulling on the rope or anything like that.
Then it was just Þrá, Vordís and Fönix left. He of course had to have a look at a lot of things around, but was rather well behaved, not at all trying to take off and explore the area.
Now we just have to wait for the foals to be born. Hope they take their time as it is rather cold at the moment.

Snilld

was happy to get visitors. Or was it just the treats in my pocket...
At least she carried her big belly very fast through the stable to not miss us, the treats and the scratch on her back, which she really enjoyed.
I was thinking a lot about the colour the lambs would get and which gender they'd be and came to the result that I probably get 2 white rams.
Well, time will show! Not so long to wait anymore, maybe 1 month.

Spring's around the corner

At least my flowers say so. Hope they are right!
After baking a baptismcake I grabbed my camera and took a few pics of my crocusses in the garden.

Easterholiday

After baking and being busy the last few weeks we decided to have a quiet Easterholiday in the East.
Of course our horses should get a holiday, too, and so we put them in the field with a big haybale. The weather was really good and they enjoyed their days off.
We went for a visit at Pétur's and Marietta's place, Finnsstaðaholt. Good to meet them after quite a long time and we had very interesting conversations about horses & men.
Marietta showed us some of her promising traininghorses and you could see, how much effort she puts in every single horse.
Takk fyrir okkur!

Confirmation

The first confirmation of the year at Húsavík was today and we were asked to bake a cake for Ingólfur's nice Guðrún María.
In the end it was huge and two smaller ones, all baked and decorated with love.

Solar eclipse

Today there was a near total solar eclipse visible above Iceland. Of course we used the chance and had a look with our pupils.
All primary schools in Iceland were so lucky that Stjörnuskoðunarfélag Seltjarnarness, Stjörnufræðivefurinn and Hótel Rangá gave them eclipse glasses so everybody could watch.
It was partly cloudy when we went down to the harbour. I was lucky to get welder's goggles to put in front of my lens as I of course was too late to buy special equipment for my camera.
I attach a tryout pic, hope you like it.

Animal stablevisitors

The number of animals visiting our horsestable has grown quite a lot during the last weeks. Not only pay the stablecats Brandur and Perla regular visits to our barn, but there are a number of dogs and puppies wandering around.
Alltogether there are 7 dogs on a more or less regular basis around the horses. They are Kató, Fróði, Gutti, Salka, Píla, Lubbi and a sweet Boxerpup.
Whilst Kató already is of the older and wiser generation, the rest of the gang is from a few months to around 1 year old or at least believes to be that age.
Píla and Salka are purebred Bordercollies, both really into herding, but still have to learn a lot. Lubbi is a Bordercollie-Icelandic Sheepdog mix and isn't as fast as the two girls, but really cute.
Today Píla visited us and was nosy about the horses. Aldís seemed to be as interested in her as you can see on the pic.

Riding clinics

We were so lucky to get Aðalheiður Anna Guðjónsdóttir north for weekend ridingclinics.
Aðalheiður graduated from the University of Hólar as a horsetrainer and ridingteacher and works at the breedingfarm Króki/Margrétarhóf in the South.
Alltogether 10 girls/ladies attented the lessons (no idea if the guys don't need lessons or are just not willing to let a young lady tell them what and how to do).

Saturdaymorning we "showed" our horses in all gaits and Aðalheiður tried all of them to get a better view on the possible problems and where we had some work to do. During lunchbreak we got delicious focaccia bread, cinnamon rolls and chocolate cake, whilst we were spending attention to a lecture about the rider's seat and why dressage is important for all horses.
In the afternoon we worked in groups of 2, horses/riders with similar goals put together. Think all of us were rather sweaty.
Sunday we all got private lessons, which were very intense, a lot to do and think. In the end all of us got "homework" and good advise how to keep working with our horses.
Hope we can convince Aðalheiður to come back soon!

KEA-mótaröð - Fivegait

A few riders from here are taking active part in a competitionseries in the ridinghall in Akureyri. There you can compete in different classes according to your experience in sportstests. It's a single and teamtest and everybody can collect points for his team.
Ingólfur, Bjarni, Einar Viðir, Gisli, Thelma and Iðunn were competing this time, Jón Óli and I served as staffmembers. Jón Óli checking the equipment and I was a judges writer with the chiefjudge of the event. It was very interesting to get to know why the marks were they way they were, writing down a lot of comments from the judge, which the riders could have a look at later.
Luckily the storm was more or less over when we started our trip back home late in the night.

Thanks to Laufey for taking these pics!

Kaldbak Open

Today we had our annual icecompetition at Kaldbakstjörn close by Húsavík
The weather was nearly as bad as last year and it wasn't easy taking pics, but I managed.
This year Bjarni Páll invited his riding guests to take part and I think it was quite a unique experience for them.
Just have a look at the album.
