Time to say goodbye
Our Kátína is going to get a new job and is therefore moving away from us. She'll join the broodmares in Útibleiksstaðir and meet young Karri, a grandson of Álfasteinn frá Selfossi. We are looking forward to getting news from her and wish her new owners all the best with this big and good looking mare.

Sjómannadagur
Tomorrow is Sailors' day in Iceland and therefore there are a lot of things going on everywhere around the coast. As usual there was a sailing announced today and we were lucky and got invited by Hulda and Jói. This time we sailed to Puffinisland (Lundey) and were surprised to see the huge amount of puffins there. They were just like a black cloud swarming around the cliffs.
Afterwards we watched the Sailorgames, which was rather funny, but wet for some contestants.

Oh, these kids...
That's probably what Vordís and Snilld would say about their offspring. The kids are growing and 2/3 of them are up to no good, always keeping their mums busy. Fönix is already teasing the big boys, walking away from his mum and pinching the older horses. Luckily they stay mostly friendly with him, but soon he'll have to learn to behave.
The lambs got their markings and numbers (208 & 209) and are already outside. The ram always following his mum, but the ewe just running around and not listening at all when her mum calls. Those kids!

Twins!
Snilld got her lambs today, a boy and a girl. All three of them are well and the lambs rather nosy. The ram is grey-mouflon and the little ewe grey. I was surprised none of them was spotted as their dad is carrying spotted and Snilld is spotted. Well, anyway, they are really cute and the little ewe looks a bit like the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I with her grey beard...

Can I eat this???

Rise like a...
...Phoenix or Fönix like it's written in Icelandic. Well, Fönix will be the name of our stallionfoal. I like names taken out of mythology and always liked the story of the Phoenix, being reborn from it's own ashes. As a Phoenix is often said to be of reddish colour, that fits, too. And last but not least, he's flying over the meadow alongside his mum.

...BOY! Vordís got her son out of Snillingur frá Íbishóli during the night and we found the happy family in the morning. Everyone well, the little one a bit tired and his mum a bit nervous. I nearly forgot the camera in the morning when we went to check out the horses. Lucky I didn't!
Here the first pics of the young fellow, now we just have to find a fitting name!

Busy...
The last days have been rather busy, shoeing, training, making fences and so on.
Thus there wasn't much time to write here. We went for a drive in Laxárdalur a few days ago, had a look at the birdlife there. Well, the birds didn't like it so much when we stopped to try and picture them. Looks like they prefer a bit more privacy.

At least the Rock ptarmigans in Haga were nosy and had a good look at us repairing the fences. Funny to see, how different they change colour. The hen was nearly brown as she already started to lay eggs, but the male was still mainly white.
Ingólfur got a few experts to help him with the fence in our big pasture...

Spring is around the corner...
...the days are getting longer, my plants start flowering and the fishingseason starts. Got my first trout ever today!
In the evening we saw a Gyrfalcon very close. Think it was a young female, which wasn't very stressed about us.
Now it's just a question of a few weeks until my lambs and foal will be born!!!

Lake Mývatn
A very welcome day off!
Whilst Ingólfur was at Þeistareykir with a group of pupils I used the day to go to Lake Mývatn. The weather was good and I took my time to stop at different places before visiting our friend Ditta and her family at Garður.

My personal highlight was watching the Harlequin ducks at River Laxá and a couple of Horned grebes at Vestmannsvatn.

Big boys playing
Today we put Farsæll and Sigtýr outside together. They used the opportunity and played a lot, maybe a bit rougher than geldings would, but they are big boys, aren't they.
Have a look at the pics here.

Eastervacation
After all this backing we definitely deserved a break and some holiday, so we packed our stuff on Saturdayevening and drove east to visit Pétur & Marietta.
This was a perfect decision and we had an interesting and relaxing time there. Hjördís came with us and had a lot of fun playing with the dogs and Nói, the cat.
We had very good conversations about horses, horses, horsestuff and more horses, visited their new neighbour Benni Lindal, took a lot of pics of Askur frá Finnsstaðaholti, their young stallion, discussed suitable cameras for them and a lot more. Time just flew and it was far too soon that we had to say goodbye and drive back home...
Aren't we cute?

Confirmationcakes
Easter is getting closer and the first young ladies and gents had their Confirmation. This time we baked for 3 ladies and I think all of them liked their cakes.
Hope, you like them, too!

Brrrrrrrrrrr...cold!
Unfortunately winter came back for a visit and the birds had difficulties finding food. So we fed them a bit in front of our door and didn't have to wait long for the first visitors. I think when it was the most there were around 16 Redwings hopping around. Nice watching them! When the Redwings didn't pay attention a Common Redpoll came and sneaked some food, too.
Fortunately our flowers don't care about snow and cold weather and keep on flowering!

Bored?
Well, we were rather bored of riding the same track again and again every single day. So we decided to change the routine, put our horses in the trailer, meet some friends and go for a ride on the gravel road to Sandur.
Alltogether we were 6 riders, 6 horses and 2 dogs. The horses were in good mood and enjoyed the change of surroundings. Really refreshing to do something different from time to time.

Marchreview
Just realized I stopped writing in the beginning of March. What a shame!
Well, there was a lot to do and some unforeseen things happened, which is probably the reason I wasn't very busy writing here.
Well, there was a lot to do and some unforeseen things happened, which is probably the reason I wasn't very busy writing here.
So here's a small review of March
On March 15th we had a wonderful walk on the beach eventhough it was snowing slightly. Always magnificent to watch the white waves crashing on the black shore. As it was rather stormy the days before there were a lot of shells on the beach and Hjördís enjoyed collecting some. She even found a Saint James scallop.
Just a few days later or better said on March 20th there was a heavy snowstorm. All our windows and the door were covered in snow and there were just a few kids in school that very day. The horses had to stay inside as all doors were completely covered. The storm continued the day after and the space behind our stable was completely filled with snow up to 4 m thick. So no way in there. Had to dig ourselves in at the other entrance, which wasn't that easy either.
Now we'll have to order a digger to be able to put more hay in the barn. Hope we'll get one soon.
Good thing about snow is of course that you can go skiing! We used the good weather on March 29th to go to Siglufjörður and try out the slopes there. Hjördís and her friend Elsa accompanied us and we had a really nice day there.
And last but not least our Sigtýr found a very convincing way to tell us he wants his box completely emptied... He just flooded everything! Must have been the way that he rolled over in his box as usual and kicked his saltstone out of the mounting and into his automatic drinker. You can imagine the rest of the story...
