Icelanders in Austria

Well, at least their roots lay in Iceland, but they hatched in Austria, better to say in Waldviertel at our neighbours' farm. Sigga in Laxamýri collected breeding eggs of her families Icelandic hens and sent them with us to Austria. 12 eggs it were, not all of them "survived" the incubator, but today at lunchtime already 4 little chicks had hatched and a fifth picking its way through the shell. I hope there will soon be a bunch of lively Icelandic chickens in Waldviertel. The black chick has even feathers on its feet and already is the little darling of our neighbour. We are looking forward to get news from them and will keep you updated.

Youngsters

We used the day to have a look at all our young horses, that are not at home but in the countryside.
First we went to Víðiholt to have a look at Jódís (Miekes young mare), Pála (in ownership of Pétur Behrens), her sister Embla and Nökkvi.
They were having a good time, eating and eating, but came when they saw us. They are all looking fine, shiny fur, not too thin and in good mood. Nökkvi has decided that we are not dangerous and that it is possible to sneak some sweets when he dares to come. He is looking very well, his neck well set and it looks like he'll be an Icelandic horse of the old type, strong and with strong feet.
Embla is big eventhough she was born late last year, at the moment her hind is higher than the front, but that's not unusal for mares her age. The only foal in the fence is following her like a shadow.
Pála is a beauty, so much looking like her mum Perla and having so much from her father Adam too.
Jódís seems to be the boss, taking care of the younger horses, teaching them manners.

Our way led us to Helluland to have a look at Sigtýr, our stallionprospect, and his friends. We didn't expect to come very close to them as they ran away last time when they saw us coming. But they thought it would be interesting to take a closer look at us and came. Kiddi's son of Kappi frá Kommu was a bit shier and hid behind Sigtýr, who inspected me and my pockets quite closely. They recently got 5 geldings as company and I think that's maybe the reason for them to be a bit calmer and more interested now.
We are happy how Sigtýr is looking, light, but not too light built, very good neck and all gaits loose. We probably put one or two mares with him next summer.

Last but not least we had a look at old Slaufa and her son out of Þristur frá Feti. Kiddi is owner of them and has 2 more mares in the same field, Embla and Snælda, sister of List.
The stallionfoal is showing tölt and very good upwardsgallopp. The little fellow might be for sale ;)

Kidsridingtour

The Vikings and the Valkyries of the Ridingclub Grani already had their rides, but not the kids. So it was time to do something about it. Ingólfur, Gisli, Svanhildur and Laufey prepared a funafternoon with a ridingtour, games and of course something to eat.
12 kids and teenagers took part and alltogether 5 grownups joined them. I think they had a very good time judgeing the happy faces when they came back.
The pizza had arrived in time and it took no time to finish it ;)
Afterwards it was playtime. We started with the cerealsboxgame, first the kids, then the "old people". More games took place in the riding hall and there was a lot of laughter.
Everybody was on the same page of doing more together next winter.

Birthdaytrip

Just arrived home and already leaving again.
That was the feeling I had, when we left for a weekendtrip to Þeistareykir with our friends Bjössi and Rakel and their kids. Ingólfur, Bjössi and his kids rode the horses up there, while Rakel, Hjördís and i went by car. The weather was perfect, sunshine and a bit rain, rainbows, no dust.
Bjössi and Ingólfur were going to celebrate their birthdays together in the highlands. Fridayevening we had nice dinner, getting familiar with the gasstove, finding out how to organise everything. Went to bed quite early, just to wake up to another perfect day.
After breakfast the others left for a walk up Bæjarfjall to write their names into the sandstonewalls up there. The other birthdayguests arrived soon after lunchtime, bringing coffee and other good things to eat and drink. A few of us went for a nice ride, enjoying the good moldpathes on very good horses. Hjördís is getting more and more courageous, having fun with Berta María, the daughter of Bjössi and Rakel.
When it was time to prepare dinner, the huge grill was lighted and the potatoes put in there. As it was Bjössi's birthday, I thought he wasn't supposed to do all the work, so I took over the grill. I enjoyed that very much and I think, people liked the delicious grilled lambmeat.
After dinner the games started. First we had to lift an empty cereals pack with our mouth, the knees, buttom and hands were not allowed to tough the ground. After the first round, a big piece of the box was taken off and hen the next round started. Krístin Lára had a very special technique to pick up the box, it looked like she made a knott into herself. Well, the guys were not as good as the ladies, noone there managed to go all the way. The ladies had 3 winners, one in each age group ;)
Then it was time for the boot-throwing competition. Not so easy to throw a boot between your legs and over your back and get it in the right direction...
Late, but not too late, everybody went to sleep and soon you could hear one or another snore.

I used the wonderful light the next morning to go for a picturewalk. The sheep were surprised to see me walking around, disturbing their peace. Some stopped to have a look, others just thought it was time for the sheep roundup and ran as fast as they could.

Soon it was time to go home and so we saddled the horses and started along the old road to Vegabúð, where we met the others on their cars with coffee and other refreshments. Hjördís, Berta and Vignir joined us grownups in the ride, but changed to the cars there (except Berta, she wanted to try Emil).
As we didn't like riding on the gravelroad we tried the small track next to the mountains and were rewarded with soft paths. The last part of the trip we went by the new fence down to Húsavíkarea. I can just recommend everybody to go up there, you have a stunning view over Húsavík and Reykjahverfi.

It was a wonderful trip with very nice people. Takk fyrir okkur!

Summerholiday

We are back from our summerholiday in Austria.
It was very, very nice to meet family and friends and to have a look at the Worldchampionships for the Icelandichorse in St. Radegund.

We started our trip a few days before our flight to Vienna, using the time to go to a concert with "Greifarnir", a band Ingólfur used to spend a lot of time with as the members are mostly from Húsavík, friends and family of him. Eventhough it was quite late when we arrived, both of us tired after the long drive to the south, the concert had not started yet. We had a good time there and went with Gunni, the drummer, home to Hveragerði as we could stay there the next days.
There was one place of history I never visited before, eventhough I have been travelling quite a lot around Iceland. So Þingvellir was the place to go and I have to admit, I was very impressed by the beauty of that very place. We had a good walk there, took a look into the visitors' center, where the geology and history of the place was explained, tried to imagine how it was in the old days, when people from all over Iceland travelled there to meet on Þingday and meet the local geese, that take care of keeping the lawn trimmed (and fertilized...). To my surprise we even saw two rather big waspnests in the rocks next to the walking path.

The flight to Vienna was nice, with good service and we enjoyed having a straight flight with Flyniki. My parents were waiting for us and they brought my little nephew Philip along as a surprise. Think he was quite impressed by all the stuff at the airport.

We stayed 2 days in Vienna and then we went to St.Radegund, where the WC was taking place. You would expect that an event that big would be announced properly, but we didn't see a single sign showing us the way nor did you hear about it in the news. What a shame!
After scouting our way to the area, we had to get a place for our car and the tent. The young man responsible for that, was very helpful and showed us where we could tent. The ground was muddy and soaked from the heavy rain earlier that day. Well, we chose the driest place and then went to have a look at the competition area, so we would be able to find it easily the next morning.
Wow, it was quite a walk and now we understood, why they had shuttle busses. But in our eyes, it was very expensive to buy these bustickets and we didn't understand why it wasn't possible to include that in the ticketprice (which already was skyhigh). Everybody had to use the bus, so why not make it easier. We regretted having paid the tickets (yes, we bought them) as the busses were sooooo full all the time and nobody checking if you where with the armband or not.
After a short night we had a pleasant time watching the Fourgait and having a good look around the place. We were disappointed about the high prices for food and the lacking possibility to choose from different caterers. One cateringservice "owned" the place, where was the variety?
We were so lucky to meet Inger, a friend of us, taking care of the tent of the Austrian Icelandichorses Association (ÖIV) and she offered us to come and have coffee there, whenever we wanted. We of course used that offer a bit ;) Think she was very busy telling everybody that complained, that the ÖIV didn't come near that WC, it was the event of Karl Piber, the owner of the stables.
Friday night we went to the partytent, nice music there, but sometimes you'd like to talk to people too, so we tried to go to the catering tent. Well, we were stopped and told, that's not possible, as there is a closed party there. In the end we just went back to our tent.

Saturday we were grilled in our seats. The sun was very strong and we were in the seats without roof (not ready to pay quite much extra for that). Think I've never been that sunburned before...
We saw good horses, but there were poorly ridden horses too and I don't understand why a rider, that is permanently pulling the reins left to right and back is not getting lower marks for that. The poor horse had not a single second peace in it's mouth.

Due to the Galashow and Galadinner that evening (25? show, 50? dinner, together 70?), it was not possible to eat at the cateringtent, so we took a drive and had a very, very nice dinner at a local restaurant for 24? both. We heard from some friends, that they left the Galashow before it ended as it was not Gala at all... Well, saved some money ;)
Gabi and two friends of her were too at the WC, they arrived on Friday early. We had a great party together, meeting other friends from Iceland and Austria. Thanks everybody for a great night!

Sunday greeted us with upcoming clouds, so we packed and moved the car out of the campsite before we went to watch the finals.
It started raining soon and we were happy to get free raincoats (used one to reserve our places). The rain came and went, but it was nicer for us than all the sun the day before.
My personal highlight were Magnús Skúlason and Hraunar showing their harmony in the Fivegait. I hope, that in some far far away time, I'll achieve that harmony with List.
What made me sad, was to see how Jóhann Skúlason used "Rollkur" in front of everybody during his A-finals and not getting punished for it. That's no horsemanship...
Well, when we went back to our car (Brigitta was coming with us to Vienna), we saw it was a very good idea to park somewhere else. We saw 4-wheeldrive cars that had to be pulled out the campsite by tractors (of course you had to pay extra for that...).

My personal conclusion of these WC is: I'm very disappointed about how expensive it was to go and be there, you had the feeling to be the cashmachine (btw: there was supposed to be a cashmachine at the WC area, but there wasn't and some shops just took cash...).
But the helpers did a great job, the track was perfect and the horses had good material.

After this exhausting weekend we took a few days to relax, go to cinema, shopping, visit my grandparents, eating with my parents, more shopping, meeting friends... Best to say: time just rushed!

The second weekend of our holiday we spent with my parents and my brother and his family at our summerhouse in Waldviertel. It has always been a place to go for me, beautiful surroundings, forrests and meadows around. a bit enchanted. My mum has been very successful in raising roses and now they are everywhere, flowering like their life depends on it. She is in a constant fight whit these huge red slugs eating all her salad and vegetables (flowers too)... Not so much fun to try and grow something with these fearce creatures around.
Philip and Anna definitely enjoyed themselves on the meadow, Philip playing soccer with Ingólfur and his dad, Anna taking first steps and having fun in the sandbox. Philip took a big liking for Ingólfur, asking him specially to come and play with him.
Last year we took a set of KUBB, the Vikinggame, with us and already had a lot of fun with it then. It was even more fun now, us playing against my dad, brother and Philip. You could see, how much they wanted to win, even accusing us of having trained hard in Iceland before coming.

Monday was "Kirtag" (once a year, kind of outdoormarket) in the neighbourvillage, where you could by a trillion of toytractors and all the machines going with them, socks, footcream, underwear (big sizes) and a lot of other stuff you wouldn't expect. But there were a few marketstalls with local and handmade products. Think my dad was very happy to go home again ;)
When we drove back to Vienna, we chose the so called "Romatinc route" (think it's the old main road) and drove through the famous Wachau, having a short look at Dürrenstein, where Richard, the Lionheart, was kept a prisoner and went slowly home.

Tuesday came far too soon, we had the eveningflight back to Iceland and, after buying as much beer as we were possibly allowed to in the Duty Free store, drove straight home to Húsavík, where we arrived early in the morning.

It was a great trip, really good to see everybody, have good chats, good food and good beer ;)

Ridingtour

Finally, after planning for a long time, we managed to get our friends together to take a small, private ridingtour in the area. We used the quiet afternoons and evenings to ride in wonderful weather in one of the most beautiful areas Iceland has to offer.
We started on Monday evening from Húsavík and rode all the way up to Viðiholt in Reykjahverfi. We that were: Svanhildur and her daughters Thelma and Sigrún, Laufey and Dagny Anna, Bjössi with Vignir and Berta and of course the two of us. A whole bunch of horses followed as you can imagine. We took Magnús, Negla, Ögn, Amor, List and Kátína, who went on her first longer trip as a handhorse, with us. The weather was good, the air clear and fresh, good horses, good riding tracks, nothing to complain. Ingólfur had a good laugh when Kátína tried to ride Amor over the first small river. He was not on the same page about that and so she had to walk herself through the water.
After a good rest we took the way over Hvammsheiði to Helluland on Tuesday afternoon. Laufey couldn't join us, but Rakel came instead. The kids were great, showing how well they already can ride even with one or two handhorses. It was a pleasure to see all of them having the stamina to go for longer rides and having good fun doing that. The highlight of the day was for sure crossing river Laxá close to Helluland. Kiddi and his dog Sparði met us on the way, Sparði swimming over Laxá right in front of me. It looked like Kátína had learned something the day before and she didn't try again to mount Amor to not wet her own feet.
Yesterday we took a circle up Þeygjandadalur over a small pass down to Laxárdalur and Halldórsstaðir. Kátína was left behind to take a restingday. It was quite warm when we started, the sun burning down from the clear sky so we went rather slow not to tire the horses too soon. There were some small brooks we had to cross and one or the other horse thought it was a crack in the ground and safer to take a huge jump over it...
After taking a wonderful break in the valley, herding some sheep, seeing two blue lambs and fighting some flies, we arrived in Halldórsstaðir around 8 o'clock in the evening. The sun was still shining from an amazingly blue sky and everybody in Halldórsstaðir waiting for the barnconcert at 9. We took a good break there, had some cookies and something to drink, a nice chat with the former headmaster and started our way back refreshed on fresh horses.
We met Kiddi at the bridge over Laxá and gave Sparði, the dog, which had followed us the whole time, back to its owners. Sparði is getting a bit old and it's not the best for him to run long ridingtours eventhough he loves it.
Now we entered the dreamland for riders! Perfect soft tracks on the riverbanks, untouched nature, no flies and just the thundering hoofbeat on the ground. This part of the day was far too short!
We made our way back to Helluland and arrived around 11 o'clock there. Still sunshine!
Today our ways seperated. Bjössi and the kids went to Reykjahverfi, Kiddi, Sigurjóna, Hrund and we went all the way to Húsavík. We were riding along river Laxá on soft tracks (where they were not spoiled yet by putting stones and sand on them for the cars of the fishermen), watching a lot of waterbirds with their young ones, were nearly run over by a truck (the driver didn't slow down at all when he saw us coming on the gravelroad! I swore quite much at him), meet some loose horses in a fence, crossed 2 bridges and speeded home to our fence. The sun was shining all the time and I think we all got quite some tan today. Thanks to all the participants, it was great riding with you!

Sail Húsavík 2011

Sail Húsavík is a coastal cultural festival, held for the first time this year. The aim is to put a spotlight on coastal life and everything connected to it. There are a lot of exhibitions and workshops going on. You can have a close look at the beautiful ships that came from Northern Europe sailing all the way to Húsavík. There are all different kinds of ships and boats, some of them already very old. The kids from the Icelandic Sailing Association have a trainingscamp in the harbour and it is interesting to watch them.

Farsæll and his mares

Things are calm and easygoing in the big field near the sea. All the horses relaxed and happy. Quite often they are relaxing alltogether in the sun, not even standing up when we are coming to check them.
Farsæll is taking good care of his mares, even being the nanny for their foals, playing with them and not getting annoyed when they try to make him play eventhough he wants to take a nap.
I attach a pic so you can see in which beautiful surroundings our horses are at the moment.

14.07.2011 09:58

This and that

Just a few words so you see we are not disappeared, but busy outside in the good weather!
You may ask yourself: what the hell are they doing all day long?
Well, in fact there are a lot of things to do (except going for a ride). We went to find some driftwood to build a shelter for Magnús' horses. Not so easy to find the right pieces and some of them were really heavy. Would be good to have a chainsaw, then we could cut those that are far too long to the right size.
Mærudagar, the sweet days, are on the calender soon and people start to think about their decoration. We are in the orange quarters and have decided to decorate with orange flowers (well, in fact I'm not much for decorating and putting all kind of orange stuff outside, which you have to take down again). So we went to Hveravellir and bought a few more flowers for the garden. There they do not only breed summerflowers but a lot of vegetables. Most of the tomatoes and cucumbers you get here come from there. We used the opportunity to buy some really ripe tomatoes, just fresh picked. They were delicious, just the way real tomatoes should be.
From Hveravellir we took a drive to Laxádalur to have a look at Perla, who is in the fence with Djákni frá Hellulandi, and visit Sigtýr and his friend. The first attempt to go closer to the two youngsters failed completely and the fleed to the other end of the fence. We followed and when we walked at them again we came across a lamb that had caught itself in barbed wire and was stuck. The wire was wrapped completely in the thick wool and there was no chance to loose it. So Ingólfur went back to the car to get a knife and cut the wool off. Not as easy as it sounds and we were really worried the lamb would die out of stress. Well, finally we got it loose, it jumped on the feet and walked away, calling its mum.
After having a quick dinner we went for a ride. I was on Amor for the first time this year. He is already 19 years old, far too fat, but still behaving like a 5 year old when you ride him for the first time a year. At least he has learned to wait for me to be ready to go. Good feeling to be back on him!
We went to Saltvík to shoe 2 horses for Bjössi. That went well and after riding back to our summerfence we had a look at Farsæll and his mares (we check them at least twice a day). Everything was peaceful there, the horses just laying and relaxing under the midnightsun.
When we came home it was already 0.30... So you can see, we are busy the whole day (and part of the night) outside!

Cavesvisit

We had talked about it a lot, planned it for ages, but never actually done it til today, when our friends Bjössi and Rakel called to invite us to go and visit caves in Þeistareykirarea.
After a drive over a gravel road we stopped to visit the first cave, right beside the old road to Þeistareykir. The ceiling had partly crushed, but you could still walk in there and have a look at tiny drippstones in the shine of your pocketlight.
We continued our drive in a lot of dust, turning into a small track leading straight to the huge lavafield. Well, partly it was really hard to call it a track, climbing over lava, avoiding holes in the ground and driving tiny turns. At the end of the track we left the cars, equipped ourselves properly and started to look for the caves. First we went to see Togarahellir, which has water and ice in the bottom. We had to climb over a snowfield to be able to go down, but the view was worth it!
Vignir and Berta, the kids of Bjössi and Rakel, were with us too and enjoyed the trip very much.
Afterwards we went to look for another cave with drippingstones. It was quite a walk as Bjössi didn't remember exactly where that cave was. As a matter of fact we had a look at every hole in the ground. That lead into finding caves, they had never been into before. Nice to see the drippingstones in some of these caves, but sad to see, that other people already had been there and breaking stones off or turning them over by stepping on them.
When we were about to turn around and walk back, Ingólfur finally found the cave they had been looking for all the time! It was a bit strange feeling to go down into the earth, just with a tiny light on your head and no idea what would expect you. As I said before, it was worth every step we took and beautiful drippingstones hanging from the ceiling and growing from the ground. We took quite some pics in the shine of our lights.
After walking back to our cars and having a coffee and some sandwiches, we drove all the way up to the hut in Þeistareykir, signed the guestbook and continued our drive down to Hólasandur and home. We grabbed some pizza for dinner and had a good chat about the day.
Ingólfur and I finished our day Whalewatching from our stallionfence in the eveningsun. Nice to see so many whales blow in the bay!

Landsmót 2011

Last Wednesday we made our way to Skagafjörður to put up our tents at Landsmótarea. The weather at Húsavík was awful, cold and rainy, but it changed a lot when we drove west. After making our home for the next days ready (we made a "camping"-village with a lot of friends) we had a first look at the competition area and watched the first 2 runs of the paceraces.
I was a bit disappointed that so many horses did not pace, but those who did, achieved good times.
Thursday the weather changed from cold and dry to warm and dry so we were busy trying not to get sunburned. Well, that didn't work out and we were happy to have some suncream to protect us a bit. Magnificent horses, difficult to chose favourites.
I used the possibility to get close to the startboxes for the paceraces and took some pics from the starts. The light was just perfect and it was really interesting to see how different the horses and rides cope with the startboxes.
Friday, Saturday, Sunday just flew and it was great to see all these fabulous horses and the perfect choreographed breedingshow of Bergur and Olil!
The A-finals on Saturday and Sunday were interesting, good horses, but it was already clear who would win. A pitty to see the horses in 5-Gait just in 3 gaits and those not even specially good. Trott and pace were quite a problem for some of them. How would it have been, if they'd have had to show walk and canter too?
The finals in kidsclass were amazing, but I'm a bit worried about the fact that the kids are already riding stallions! No matter how well behaved the stallions are, if there is something going wrong, the little riders have no chance to do anything! I think it is worth thinking about that a bit.

My highlights: Díva frá Álfhólum, Kjarnorka frá Kálfholti, Spuni and the other offspring of Álfasteinn, the breedingshow of Bergur and Olil and of course to see Bragur, Ingólfur's former horse, compete in 100m Flying Pace and reaching a time of 7,70 sec. and the 4th place.

Farsæll meeting his mares

Finally we finished the fence, put a huge hayroll in the field and collected the first mares that are supposed to meet Farsæll.
The way they were behaving most of them are ready for the stallion or close to that. So there'll be a lot to do for Farsæll.
When we released him into the field he was interested in getting to know the girls, taking quite a sprint to meet them. They were not that eager to get to know him, some of them greeting him with hard kicks. Others were really interested, following him and trying very hard to get his attention emoticon
We hope he'll serve all of them well and there will be beautiful foals in nice colours next spring.

Laxamýri

Hjördís has been with us the last days, helped a lot around the horses, having fun with her cousin Hrund and going for rides with her dad.
Today we went to Laxamýri to shoe 3 horses and used this perfect opportunity to have a look into the chickenstable and of course in the cowstable. Atli and Síf, parents of Sigga and Atli, are trying to have and breed as many colours and colourshades of cows and chickens as they can. In my eyes it is as important to keep the different colours and shades in cows and chickens as it is in horses and sheep. It would be a great loss to miss the rare colours out off the breed. I really enjoyed getting to know the different colours and learn a bit about genetics while Sigga and Hjördís had a good time feeding the calves. Think I'll have to take some pics of these colourful cows when they are outside in the pasture!

20.06.2011 00:36

Sigtýr

The last days we were busy reorganising our herd, taking Sigtýr and Nökkvi in, driving Vordís, Embla, Pála and Jódís to the countryside, seperating the traininghorses from the others and so on.
Sigtýr and Nökkvi went through "Kindergarten", learned about the halter, being led and standing still tied to the wall. They did really well and were fast to understand what we wanted. All they've learned now will make handling them so much easier in the future.
Today we used the opportunity to drive Sigtýr to Helluland, where he is staying with another young stallion, son of Kappi frá Kommu. First we had to check the whole fence, quite some walk in bumpy area as the fence is around 1000m long in one direction.
After being released the guys went to check their new place and I think they'll have a lot to do eating all the grass in this huge field!
In the evening we took a drive to the countryside and had a nice surprise when we were passing the fence with Maggi's horses. A Short-eared Owl had taken place on one of the fencesticks and wasn't afraid of the car at all. So we could drive quite close and take a pic. But that wasn't the only owl we saw that evening. It was 3 alltogether!

News from Farsæll

We quite like the looks of Farsæll so we decided to show him for conformation. Ingólfur shoed him and I combed and shined before we brought him to Torfunes as they'd teach him how to stand right and how to behave when the judges have a good look. Erlingur showed him for us and everything went fine. My biggest sorrow was, that he's maybe behave stupidly as he is still so young, just 4 years old. But he stood like a rock when he was measured and his testicles checked eventhough it was a new place, a lot of horses around and a lot going on.
Then Erlingur and Bensi went to show him to the judges, which had a very close look at him, touching him here and there. I think it's quite a hard job to judge so many different horses in short time. He did fine and behaved very well in the huge riding hall in Akureyri.
Farsæll got an overall score for conformation of 7,92 with 8,5 for neck, which is definitely not so bad ;-) We had hoped for a bit better judgement, but he is still growing and things might look completely different next time!
Afterwards we took a small detour and had a look at 4 foals of Farsæll, born just a few days ago. 1 of them was a black and white pinto with a star, 1 black with 4 socks and a star, 1 reddun with at least 1 sock and a blaze and the last one pure black. It was nice to see these little fellows running around on tölt and trott, having fun teasing their mums. I attach some pics of them.
