News from the patients

As we blogged 2 weeks ago, Vigri and Embla are inside due to injuries. Vigri's foot is looking so much better that he is allowed to go home and be outside in the herd again. We are really happy that he recovered so fast from this wound and that everything is growing together so well.
Embla is halfway through her 4 weeks stay in the stable. She is busy making everybody clap and feed her emoticon  Allover she is in good mood, sometimes getting bored by staying all the time inside, but that's something she has to go through. We are trying to support her recovery with highdosed mineralfood, which will do her good and give all the minerals she'll need to grow the broken bone together. We cannot see any sign of lameness at the moment. Let's hope the best for a full recovery of Embla!

Magnús

Magnús frá Höskulsstöðum, son of Perla and Geisli frá Sælukoti, brother of Sigtýr and Bensi's Katla, has been with us since autumn and came into the stable a few weeks ago. He is charming everybody there, being described as the politest horse in the stable, waiting for his food, never rude and so on. Well, he is that and so much more! He and Ingólfur are starting to be a team, understanding each other better and better. I took some pics of the result of this teamwork and put them in an album here.

Nökkvi II

Well, Nökkvi has been with Perla the last week, so we thought it would be time to move these two and let them meet the herd. Unfortunately, Nökkvi had bonded more with Gisli's gray mare than Perla and was not willing to follow her through the gate. Close to giving up we finally got an idea how it could work and it did! Nökkvi followed Perla to the other fence and was welcomed there by a big group of nosy horses. I wouldn't call it a "warm welcome"... Think all the attention was too much for this little fellow and he decided to run from them. Everybody (except Gisli's Litla-Vaka) followed him and we were surprised how fit these foalmares are.
There are some pictures in a new album.

Nökkvi

With all the things going on here, I forgot to mention yesterday, that Nökkvi, our foal from Eyjafjörður, arrived too. We were both really eager to see him as we just had seen pics of him as a very young foal. Today we took the first pics of him and hope to get a few better shots the next days.
Nökkvi is quite big with lots of mane and tail and not shy towards the other foals. He shows good movements and takes big steps when showing the others what a tough guy he is ;-)
At the moment he is in a smaller fence to get to know Perla a bit better but will soon move to the big 3,5 ha meadow where he'll get to know Sigtýr and the others. We are looking forward to see these 2 fellows playing!

Bad news

Monday we had to get Vigri, son of Vaka and Vökull, and bring him to the animalhospital in Húsavík as he injured his leg stepping into a hole (at least we think so). He got quite a big wound, but didn't hurt anything important in his leg. He was put in a hospitalbox in Saltvík and has to stay there at least for the next 2 weeks.
We thought it would be the one and only ambulancetransport. Well, we got a phonecall on Thursdaymorning, that one of the young horses in the fence next to the road was lame, just walking on 3 legs. Tommi had a closer look for us and unfortunately it was Embla.
When we came to check her out, she could barely walk, hopping on 3 legs when she wanted to go faster. We saw that she could use the leg and stand on it, but walking was difficult. Vignir the vet had a look at her and recommended to take X-rays as such a lamness is usually cause by a fraction of the bone. Not so good news for us and we were really upset and in sorrow about Embla.
Friday morning we had the next ambulancetransport to the animalhospital. This time Embla going for her X-rays. She was really calm and well behaved, being away from her mum for the first time. Vignir prepared himself very well for the shots, showing us in his books what kind of X-ray he wants to take and instructing us how to hold the leg and so on. After shooting he went to the local hospital to let them develop the pics for him. We were waiting quite nervously for his return. Only Embla was relaxed and had a closer look at the X-ray machine.
Then it was for sure, there was a fraction in Embla's leg, but not as bad as we had feared. The upper arm bone is splittered at the end, close to the ellbow, probably after a kick from another horse. The young lady has to stay inside the next 4-8 weeks, not allowed to move too much. That's not exactly how she thinks about it, but necessary. So please keep your fingers crossed together with us that everything will grow together neathly!

Beachwalk

Sometimes it's good to change routines and today I went for a walk with List instead of taking a ride. In fact we have been quite busy riding inside and doing our homework after lessons with Veronika. So to get our heads free we were lazy today and took a relaxing beachwalk.
List is not used to the sea and the beach is a big mystery to her. Especially the coming and going waves are suspicious and could be an enormous horse-eating monster, so better take care and watch them closely ;-) At least she was ready to get her feet wet (my feet got wet too...)

Visitors in Helluland

Eventhough the weather was not specially good, the horsefarm in Helluland got special visitors today. Michel Becker and Petra Mazetti, both working together with Wiesenhof in Germany, came to visit Bergþóra and Kiddi and try some of the horses.
After having a look at the young, just started horses and watching Kiddi and Ingólfur showing the mares Brenna and Negla, Michel mounted Negla and tried her. He told us about her strong and weaker sides and showed exactly how he´d work with her. I think, Ingólfur had a lot to think about on the way home ;-)
It was a pleasure to meet Michel and Petra, talk about horsebreeding and training and get individual tipps for training.

Great weekend

Hjördís stayed with us this weekend and we decided to try the skiing area in Akureyri. Last time we wanted to do that, it was so stormy, that they didn´t open that day.
Well, we were lucky and Hjördís had her first skiing lessons without us. As she could already break she was soon allowed to go with her group to the small lift and down the beginners slope. Her teacher was really happy how positive she was, always trying her best.
After 2 hours in skiing school Hjördís went twice downhill with us and we could see how much she already had improved in that short time.
She got a "passport" where the teacher crossed with all the things she already can do and the slopes she went down. In the passport was a voucher for a free meal from the kidsmenue in Restaurant Greifinn in Akureyri. I think this is a really nice idea and a nice way to support the young skiers as you get sooooooooooooo hungry after skiing for some time ;-)

Today we had a lazy morning, having late breakfast and then trying to do a 1000 pieces puzzle (still a lot left to do...). After lunch we went to have a look at the mares, youngsters and foals. They were all fine, Pála having fun stealing my glove out of my pocket and waving at the other horses with it. Think she was a bit disappointed that she couldn´t eat it. Embla had a closer look at Hjördís (in fact closer than Hjördís liked) but Sigtýr kept a bit distance, not so sure what to think about her.
Ingólfur took Ösp to Saltvík as she´s starting her training. We already had her inside in autumn 2009, but just really short and didn´t do that much with her then. So in fact he´ll have to start allover again.
Think the highlight of the day was the outsideride on Þokkadís, Maggi´s mare. Hjördís has been riding her inside, but hasn´t gone for an outsideride for very long time. Ingólfur had her on the safetyline and so both could enjoy the ride ;-)
It was a busy but really good weekend!

Farsæll in motion

Time has come to take a few pics of Farsæll. We used the nice weather and snow yesterday to do that and he didn't disappoint us! I think he liked best to jump over the big snowpile and buck around afterwards emoticon
So enjoy the pics of Farsæll in motion!

Mývatn Open 2011

Early in the morning we went to Saltvík to get Negla ready for Mývatn Open. As usual she had slept lying and was quite dirty and her tail tangled. After cleaning her and collecting all the stuff we´d need for her during the day, we put her and Greifi, Svanhildur´s horse, in the trailer, which went with Tommi and Svanhildur and went to Mývatn. In Laxamýri we picked Sigga up, who was gonna spend the day with us.
The weather promised to be quite fine, cold but sunshine.

After arriving and getting everything ready it was time for Ingólfur to warm up. He had to start in the second group. María Marta and Jóhannes, both members of our riding club, were in the first group. It went well for them and they went both to the finals. Ingólfur and Negla had a bit trouble when they had to show speedchanges. Fast tölt was fine, except for a small part where Negla hopped. They got 5,33 final score and place 8. I think it was a good experience for both of them and Negla is on her way up.
María Marta was the winner of Tölt B, the other members of Grani were in places 6-8. Not so bad over all.

The horses in Tölt A were good to really good but got higher marks than comparable horses in Tölt B. Looks like the judge wore his pink glasses...
My personal favourite was Nanna frá Halldórsstöðum, which landed in second place behind Saumur. Nanna showed easy, flowing tölt and was dancing on the ice. Wonderful to watch her, that´s the type of horses we should breed!

The stallions in Stóðhestakeppni were interesting to watch. Everyone special in his personal way. Blær and Mötull frá Torfunesi showed the stronger built and powerful looking type, some of the others the more sporty modern type. Blær seems to be a perfect, soft and willing ridinghorse. His rider Erlingur was not moving at all in the saddle.

Speedpace was the last test on Mývatn and the horses indeed were speedy! We saw a lot of good pace, well ridden on fast horses. There were of course some, that had difficulties and one or another that should prepare himself and his horse better at home.

Around 5.30 we started our journey home, tired, with around 600 pictures in my camera and looking forward to a hot shower. There was just one obstacle between us and our shower: frozen pipes in Saltvík which meant: no water for our horses. The shower had to wait, water for the horses is more important. We were lucky and not alone in Saltvík so everybody helped to defreeze the pipes (with electric heaters and all other tricks we could think about) and after 1 hour or so everything worked fine again and we could finally go home and take a shower!

I attach a pic of Ingólfur and Negla and one of Nanna ;-)

Mývatn Open 2011

The weather is, to say it politely, winterly and cold. Temperatures around -10°C and quite strong wind don't make it easy to train the horses outside and go through the program for the Töltcompetition on Mývatn.
Nevertheless we hope for calmer weather tomorrow when Ingólfur and Negla will take part in Tölt B on Lake Mývatn. They are the fifth to compete and I hope everything will go well and Negla shows herself at the best. I'll be there with my camera and try to get good pics ;-)

Visit in Holmavað

In the morning we went to Holmavað to help Bensi and Ella to muck out the stable of the 1year old sheep. The thick layer of shit was cut into pieces with a spade and then stapled on a pallet to dry outside. Later this will be teared into pieces and used to smoke salmon and lamb. In my opinion, this method is giving the tastiest results ;-)
Kátur, Bjarni´s and Elsa´s dachshound, which is our guest at the moment, went of course with us and had a busy day in the countryside. So much to see, smell and do! Mirra and Pollý were playing with him, he used the chance to bark at the sheep, eat something I don´t wanna know what it was (didn´t look good) and roll over in a lot of smelly things (fortunately he rolled over in some nicesmelling hay too).
Mysa, our sheep, seems to be a colourchanger! She was nearly white in spring when she went to the mountains, came back grey and is changeing now again to white. Interesting to watch all these changes. We hope she´ll get some healthy lambs in spring and maybe one will inherit her colourchangeing!

Trainingnews

Horsetraining is going fine at the moment, the horses show interest in learning something new and have fun when we go for outside rides.
Tína and Sigga have started together and it is a pleasure to see them work together inside. The next step will be to take them for an outside ride, of course with a safetyline.
Skömm is learning how to interprete the bit and reins, Áli and Farsæll are a bit further.
Áli will soon go back to Kiddi, but first he has to refresh everything he has learned so far.
Farsæll is calm and takes everything well and easy. Ingólfur led us a few times both on walk and trott, last time we tried a few rounds alone on walk. That went well and we are looking forward to the next trainingsessions. Most important for us is, not to ask too much at once from the young horses. They have to have time to understand what you want. Then they´ll be positive about the human and learning.

Winterholiday

We used our 2 days winterbreak in school to drive List and Magnús to Kiddi in Helluland and ride with him. Both horses really enjoyed to change the environment a bit and were very willing and forward through the rides.
It was a pleasure to watch Ingólfur and Magnús both on tölt and trott. A true Gæðingur I´d call Magnús. He reminds me very much of his father Geisli!

Sigurjóna and Fanney were so kind to allow us to use their horses, so we could go for a ride on ice with Kiddi. That was partly spooky as it was quite warm the days before and the ice had melted on the surface, but frozen again during night. So there was just a thin layer of ice on top, then water and then thick ice underneath. The horses were breaking the think layer with every step, not really giving us a secure feeling. They actually didn´t mind ;-)
On the way home the brothers Móli (in ownership of Fanney) and Svörður (Sigurjóna´s horse) showed that they are not old at all and competed who´d be the fastest on tölt.

It was a nice stay and we will be back to go for another ride soon!

Þorramót in Saltvík

Today on the last day of the old month þorri the local riding club Grani held a small competition where everybody could take part in at the new stable area in Saltvík. The weather was cold, but sunny and the view to the mountains on the other side of the bay just breathtaking. A perfect background for taking some pictures!

The kids had to show 6 length and could choose how they show their horse. Dagny Anna and Dimma chose tölt and a bit of trott, Iðunn and Mína showed both tölt and trott, Berta and Síla showed that even very young riders have fun to compete and Vignir and Emil showed that young horses and young riders can match very well.
All the kids got a small reward for taking part.

The grown-ups had 6 lenght too, but had to show slow tölt, trott and fast tölt or pace.
It was nice to watch experienced riders and riders competing for the first time together. Everybody enjoying themselves and having fun together.
Einar Viðir won the grown ups, followed by Gisli, Maria Marta, Svanhildur and Einar.
