Icelandic nationalday

Today Iceland celebrates its nationalday and that is usually done with a lot of speeches, parades, attractions for kids, coffee sales and more. Everybody is cheerful and outside to celebrate.
The weather was really good and so we were looking forward to lead the local parade on horseback. Hjördís came with us for the first time.
We were 12 from the local riding club, 6 grown-ups (the 2 of us, Tommi, Svanhildur, Maggi and Siffi) and 6 kids (Hjördís, Sigrún, Thelma, Guðbjörg, Dagny Anna and Iðunn).
Tommi, Siffi and I got flags and were supposed to be in front of everybody and behind us were the other grown-ups and the kids. We were followed by half of Húsavík on our way to the sportshall.
Everything went fine, the horses were well behaved and the streets of Húsavík nearly clean after us...

Too much to do and too beautiful weather

Well, I just saw that our blogg has been really empty for a long time. That´s mostly my fault as the weather has been so good and we were busy with the ridingschool in Saltvík and a lot of other things. There was not much time left to write here.
I´ll try to do things better again emoticon

Gleðilegt sumar

Happy first day of summer to everybody!

At the moment it doesn´t look much like summer here, but if you can "read" nature around, everything is preparing for it. Our horses lose their wintercoat, the flowers start to bloom, the birds come back from their winterquarters and sing in our garden. AND: there is beautiful sunshine outside!

We use the time (and our horsetrailer) to drive to the countryside and take longer rides there. The horses really much like that change and we too ;-)

The lambingseason is near and we are waiting for our eve Mýsa to get her twins in early May. We are very much looking forward to that. Hope she can manage to take care of both as she is still quite young and the younger eves usually just get one lamb.

Vordís and Hugsun have huge foalbellies. Actually Vordís looks like exploding. The foals should be born in June, so there is still some time to this event.
Perla, who´ll get her foal later in summer, has already weaned Ella, her daughter out of Adam, and started to put more weight on. We are very much looking forward to see her foal with Farsæll. Ingólfur ordered a brown-spotted mare, we´ll see what he gets ;-)

News, news, news

Sorry for not writing so long, but we have been busy training our horses, teaching at Saltvík Ridingschool, visiting our friends and so on.
Not much to tell from our place here, everything is going fine.

BUT: there has been an eruption in the South of Iceland. To see news and pics about that, have a look here:

New saleshorses

We put in 2 new saleshorses. Both are young geldings, which would be ready for training in autumn 2010. Áli and Frosti are clearly promising young horses, that could fit for pleasure riding or competition.

Farsæll

Yesterday we went to have a bit better look at Farsæll and Vignir´s young stallions. The bunch of them is enjoying their youth in a big field in Eyvík with a lot to eat and a beautiful view (in fact I think that matters more to me as a photographer than to them emoticon ).
Farsæll is doing well and developed into a beautiful young stallion as you can see on the pics.

Winterride

The weather is fantastic, the ice is thick and strong so what would be nicer than a good ride over a frozen lake?
Yesterday we used these perfect conditions to take a ride on Kaldbakstjörn and today we met a few riders up on Botsvatn, where the ice is even thicker and you can ride for more than 1,5 kilometers in one direction. Looks like everybody is having fun!

Pictures, pictures, pictures

We used the wonderful Sunday afternoon to visit Kiddi/Helluland and took pictures of his young horses and breeding mares.
We started with the foals that are inside at the moment and then we drove the herd in and pictured one by one. All of them are charming personalities, lively and proud, showing tölt and trott, some of them even pace.
So enjoy the pics!

Friends

Svarti-Pétur, the small black and white kitten, and Brandur, his big brother, are getting more and more used to being in Saltvík and around the horses. They are making friends with these big and powerful creatures and Svarti-Pétur has already found out that it is not too bad to have a big and furry friend. At least you can use him as a sofa! List doesn't mind the little fellow on her back and he thanks her with cleaning her winterfur.

Hjördís & Ögn

Hjördís stayed here over New Year and of course she went on horseback during her visit. Good to own a horse! Hjördís got more and more courageous every day and in the end she was trotting/tölting next to her dad (he was running emoticon ) without being held by him.
Ögn took good care of her owner and seemed to enjoy all the attention too.

Little helpers in Saltvík

As the mice had a big feast in Saltvík Bjarni and Elsa finally decided to end that party and get professional help.
May I introduce the 2 helpers: Brandur and his brother Svarti-Pétur (he still has to grow a bit but is already hunting everything that is moving, horses included)
We hope they´ll do a good job and keep Saltvík mice-free.

Happy New Year!

We wish you a happy and successful New Year 2010!

As usual there was a big bonfire on 31th of December in the late afternoon and beautiful fireworks too. Short before midnight the inhabtitants of Húsavík started their private fireworks and soon the nightsky was lit up by an uncountable number of firework. A really beautiful view! See a few pics in the new album.

Busy Sunday

Eventhough the weather was not the best last Sunday, we used that day to do a lot of things!
In the morning we went to make Kleinur, a traditional Icelandic fried pastry. Soon the whole kitchen was filled with a promising smell, which even lured some guest to us. Of course they were allowed to try!
Afterwards it was time to move Farsæll and Vignir's stallions to their winterpasture. We were just on our way to assist Vignir when we got a call from him, that he doesn't need our help, all the stallions were already in the trailer! Why can't that always work so fast and without trouble?
Well, the guys enjoy the big pasture and we'll gonna visit them soon with the camera to make new pics of them!

Ridingschool

The older classes of the school in Húsavík can choose Horsemanship as a subject. At the moment they have lessons in horsebackriding, later in winter they'll have theorylessons and in spring practical lessons again.
We used the beautiful weather to have a small competition outside with the more experienced group.
Looks like they had fun!
