New saleshorse

Skömm frá Hellulandi is new on our salespage. She is a daughter of Hróður frá Refsstöðum and the first class mare Rós frá Hellulandi. Probably a competition/breedinghorse for the future.

Garri frá Hellulandi is sold to Germany! After passing his vet check yesterday he travelled south to Reykjavík and will leave Iceland on 5.12.
We wish him and his new owner the best and hope they'll be successful together!

Ögn going to Bakka

Ögn was the last of our horses not in Bakka. She and Gisli's red mare "cleaned" the summer pasture of the last grass and now it was time to move them. But before we let the mares go, we took their shoes off.
In Bakka they were soon greeted by the whole herd and of course everybody had to run a bit and take a good look at the newcomers. Bragur didn't wait for any other gelding to take "his mare" and leaded our horses away from the others.

In Saltvík Nathan, Farsæll and little Venus enjoyed the good weather outside and had fun in the snow.

Saleshorses

We were quite busy the last days putting up the side with saleshorses. We were talking to our friends, asking for horses to be put on it, taking pictures and finally setting everything together. At the moment are 12 horses on the salesside, rangeing from foals to fully trained horses.
Maybe there is something for you?

Moving our horses

As the level of river Laxá is getting higher and higher it was time to move most of our horses from Holmavað to other places. Vordís, Bragur, Kátína, Pjakkur, Ösp, Mímir and Jodís went to Bakki, where they will hopefully stay till New Year. In Bakka is a big herd of horses at the moment and there is enough to eat for all of them. It was less trouble than expected to catch all the youngsters and they were all going without problems into the trailer.

Hugsun, Huginn and Alrún went to our fence next to the road, where we'll soon start to feed them hay. Alrún just followed Hugsun into the trailer, but unfortunately Huginn didn't follow his mum at all. In the end Ingo and Bensi had to catch him and put him into the trailer. It was quite funny to watch them trying to catch him. Unfortunately was my camera in the car when they did it...

Perla, Katla, Amor and Vaka are staying in Holmavað and get good hay from Bensi. Think they'll come well over the winter...

Ögn is still on our summerpasture and should take care of the rest of grass there together with Gisli's mare. When they are finished they'll be moved to Bakki too.

Finally a name!

Perla's daughter finally got a name! She'll be called Katla, which is the name of a volcanoe in the south of Iceland. Hopefully her temper will not be as unpredictable as a volcanoe...

She and the other horses are enjoying their time outside, eventhough it has been snowing a few days ago and been quite stormy the last days. But when we visited them today, they were just fine and relaxed.

Melgerðismelarétt

Of course it's not enough to just visit 1 Horse Roundup a year and so we went to  Melgerðismelarétt in Eyjafjörður. Not as many horses in as many colours as in Skrapatungurétt but a lot of nice built, good looking horses at different age.
There was one or another "eyecatcher" in the herd and a really special foal, which was already shown in Eidfaxi earlier this year. It is a 3 coloured Stallionfoal, red-black spottet with a star and a snip. Have a look at him and the other horses there in "Pictures" - "Horses" - "Melgerðismelarétt"

Perla coming home

Perla and her still unnamed marefoal out of Geisli were with a lot of other mares and foals in the field with Adam frá Ásmundarstöðum. After the sonarscan on sunday (Perla is with foal!), we took her and her foal back to our other horses in Hólmavað.
There we had to drive the whole herd in to give them the injection for deworming and keeping them licefree over winter. Not everybody was happy about being grabbed and treated by Mieke. The reactions ranged from easy and calm to handle (the grownups, Ögn, Kátína and Farsæll) to not so willing to be put on a halter and even really trying to escape by jumping the fence twice (Huginn). Well, in the end we got them all!
I think, everybody was happy, when this work was done and the horses were allowed to go back into their field!

Visit at the field

Recently we visited our horses in the field and were amazed how fast our ridinghorses gained weight there... Vordís and Bragur had a quite big grasbelly when we arrived (not to talk about the young horses...) and seemed to enjoy their holiday.

Potatoeharvest

Halldór and Ói were trying out 12 new potatoebreeds from Europe and were naturally quite interested how that would work out. All except 1 (Vitelotte, violet potatoes) were doing fine and are worth thinking about planting them again. Especially "Pink fir apple" an old breed from Britain did really well and delivered a whole box of new potatoes.
But first of all they have to pass the "Tastetest" and then will be decided about what to do next year.
You can have a look at the different breeds in "People" - "Potatoeharvest"

Skrapatungurétt - Horse Roundup

We used the good weather on sunday to go and have a look at Skrapatungurétt close to Blönduos. Around 600 horses were gathered together in the mountains, where they were allowed to roam free during the summer months, and driven down to Skrapatungurétt where they were sorted out and driven back to their homefarms by their owners.
I really liked how the farmers were treating the horses while sorting them. Everybody tried to work together and do it as calm as possible. No unnecessary show!
Of course I had my camera with me! You find the pics in "Horses" - "Skrapatungurétt 2008".
Our friend Mieke was with us, she took a lot of pics too and put them in her own Webalbum. Just click here if you want to have a look!

Autumnholiday

Our horses have been doing a great job over summer and have been in training since middle of december. So it is time to take the shoes off and give them a good rest till december! Bragur and Vordís are now with our young horses and the breeding mares in the field and can enjoy their lives a bit and just be horses! Of course we'll go and visit them from time to time, bring them some bread and take pictures...

Göngur & Rétt

As usual the farmers in Aðaldalur went in the first week of September to collect their sheep in Þeistareykirarea. This year Jutta, Gabi and we joined them. On wednesday afternoon we started our trip from Hólmavað to þeistareykir on horseback. It's about 5 hours ride so everybody had at least 1 handhorse to change. We started around 5  in Hólmavað and arrived under the shine of Northern Lights around 10 in Þeistareykir. After we found ourselves some sleepingplaces we went to bed early as some tiring days were awaiting us.
Thursday and friday we collected sheep and drove them south to a fence where they stayed over night to saturday. Saturday morning we started to herd them down to Hraunsrétt where they are sorted out on sunday.
Some sheep had quite different ideas about directions than we... So we often had to go and drive them back or try to stop them from going at all. Not an easy job all the time and some were trying again and again and again... I think everybody was happy, when we had them safe in the fence next to Hraunsrétt.
Sunday at 10 in the morning, the sorting started. We had to look for lambs and sheep with the number 45 Þ 5 on their earmarks and bring them to Bensi's place in the rounduparea. Not so easy as they have been spending the summer free and untouched in the mountains and were therefore not so willing to give up their freedom and let themselves be caught...
